Cardiovascular Physiology Lab worksheet
Instructions: Complete the tasks in this worksheet and answer all
questions (highlighted in yellow).  Upload to the Google classroom in
pdf format.
There are TWO parts in this worksheet.
Part A is for you to record the results of the Experiment 2 (done at home).  You can refer to the
Lab Manual, p. 29 or the briefing PowerPoint slides for details.  A short description of the
procedure for doing the experiment is given below.

A. Cardiovascular Physiology Lab – Experiment 2: heart

rate -effect of body position and exercise recovery time.
Objectives of the experiments:
1. To investigate the effect of body position on heart rate.
2. To determine my exercise recovery time.
Perform the experiment at home.
Briefly,
1.  Use palpation to count your pulse for three positions.
Blood is pumped around the body by the heart and is transported through blood
vessels.  Arteries carry blood away from the heart to the rest of the body and veins
return the blood to the heart.  Pressing a finger against the skin can feel the blood
pumping at the pulse points.  The diagram below shows how pulse is taken.
supine

2.  Jog in place for 3 min.

After exercise, immediately sit down and get the pulse [multiply the number of beats you count in 10
seconds by six]. What is the heart rate after exercising? Write this number in the table provided.
•    Now, record what time it is (including seconds) or start a stopwatch.
•    Continue to sit and rest, measure and write down the heart rate every minute for the next five minutes.
How does the heart rate change as you continue to rest after exercising stopped?  Record your heart rates
in the table.

•    If the heart has not reached the resting rate, continue to rest, but only measure and record the heart
rate every two minutes. Continue measuring it until it returns to the resting rate. How does the heart
rate continue to change over time?

1. Records of your heart/pulse rate [participation marks – 5

marks]
Attach ONE photo as a record that you have performed the
experiment.

by adding
columns until it returns to your resting HR.
Answer the questions:
 What was the heart-rate recovery time, or the amount of time it took the
heart to return to its resting rate after exercising? (1 mark)
After running in place for 3 minutes, it took ____4___ minutes for my heart rate
to recover or return to the resting heart rate.
 How did heart rate change over time after exercising stopped? Plot a graph
to show your heart rate before, during and after exercise.  Indicate the
recovery time. (5 marks)

2. Target heart rates calculation
What should your heart rate be when working out, and how can you keep track of it?
Task: To identify Your Target Heart Rate Zone; which is a safe and comfortable level to perform physical
activities.  Calculate your target heart rates based on the guide given below and
write on the space provided.

My target heart rate (bpm):  Lower limit =_155.15____________________________________

Upper limit = ____181.35_________________________________

3. Answer the following questions.

A. Several students are conducting an experiment to test the effect of exercise
on heart rate.  Students do 20 sit-ups in one minute of exercise.  The data chart
below shows the heart rate at one-minute intervals for each student.
Which of the following is the dependent variable?   Highlight the correct answer.
(A.  time,  B.   heart rate, C.   type of exercise, D.   number of sit-
ups).       [2 marks]

B. List two observations from the following graph for a trained athlete and an
untrained person.   [4 marks]

_During an exercise session, an untrained person's heart rate is higher than an athlete who is in peak

physical condition. The recuperation period for a trained athlete is less time-consuming than the period

for an untrained person. The untrained person's maximum heart rate during  Although the highest heart

rate for trained athletes during an exercise phase is 150 bpm, A 135 bpm exercise period is used.
