Winged Slayers

Sam
2:49pm. 1 minute left. Summer holidays in 54 seconds. The pressure
built on my back as if each second a new 500-page long book piled
over my back. It didn’t matter though. I had a detention at the end of
the day. I received it from the worst teacher in school. Her name was
Miss Strict. It’s funny. Her name and personality were similar, yet
you could tell when you saw her face that the two were miles apart.
Strict is different from pure cruel. My detention was given when Miss
Strict caught me on my phone during break. The thing is she has no
right to wander this school like she owns it because she had been
given a suspension from teaching and a £10,000 fine when it was
discovered she called a black boy the N word after he accused her of
being the worst person ever. He wasn’t wrong. Luckily for me, the
teacher that loves me the most and is the absolute best is monitoring
the detention so it will only be 10 minu- BEEP! BEEP! BEEP! There
goes the bell. 10 minutes till 6 weeks of freedom.

Finally! My detention is over! I dashed over to the parking lot and-
Uh Oh. Miss Strict is over there seemingly waiting for someone. She
glanced in my direction and spotted me, “SAM FLEDGING
BLAKLING! What do you think you’re doing? Your detention is far
from over. Meet me in my classroom in precisely 3 minutes,” She
demanded. My mind was so busy telling myself off that I got a
splitting headache. Miss Strict gleamed at me with her evil eyes and
walked off. Her wrinkly, old face and pale white skin disappeared
from view and her dark, brown hair as well as her flimsy, green
cardigan and grey jeans were the only images of her I could view. I
banged my fist against the wall and shouted dang it. 3 minutes passed
and I was in Miss Strict’s classroom. She still wasn’t there. “That’s
strange,” I thought to myself. Miss Strict is all about being orderly
and organised. From behind me a whoosh and slam pierced my ears
and the light bulb shattered. I jumped to face the other direction in
alarm. There, Miss Strict stood. No. She levitated. That’s when I
noticed wings had sprouted from her back causing her ugly cardigan
to tear away revealing fiery darkness spreading through her body. Her
hands became talons. Sharp, lethal talons that could make anyone
whimper in fear. The shadowy streak spread to her face and
uncovered the true form of our horrible Miss Strict. She was a crow.
But not any crow. A dangerous huge crow with a high held head and
vicious eyes that paralyzed any prey she chose. I fell to my knees and
terrified tears sprouted from my eyes. I prayed that I was dreaming
when all of a sudden, a sword with a hilt of gold and a keen, razor-
sharp edge zoomed through the door and impaled itself into the small
of Miss Strict’s back. The horrifying sight of who had once been my
teacher with blood spewing out of the monster, displayed itself before
my eyes. Cowering back from the view, I braced myself for whatever
predator was prowling behind the door. An enormous leg emerged.
Then another. Then 2 colossal arms. Eventually the face was revealed.
It was beautiful. And it belonged to a girl. The giant body of this
stunning girl didn’t protrude fear, just friendliness. “We have to get
out of here right now,” she greeted me. My mouth refused to open so
I nodded instead. So many questions raced through my mind, but I
could sense the danger we were in. Spontaneously, the girl began to
shrink until she stood about the same size as me. Maybe a bit shorter.
“Damn it,” she muttered under her breath. “We need to fly; without
my giant potion I can’t take on all the upcoming monsters.” “Where is
the helicopter?” I asked. “No helicopter, we’ll have to use our wings.”
She bore a serious expression. “You’re kidding right? Wings! I don’t
have wings. I hope you know I’m a human right?” She seemed calm
and replied, “I know exactly what you are, and it may seem
incredulous, but you are not human, and I’ll prove it to you as well as
saving your life. Concentrate on your back. Imagine a pair of
feathered wings sprouting from your back. Got it? Now move your
hands in the motion I’m about to show you without losing
concentration.” She cupped her hands, lifted her thumbs and brought
her hands towards her chest. After 3 seconds, she thrust her hands
outward and released them from each other. Light surrounded her and
when it dispersed, a pair of mighty purple wings were attached to her
back. I focused and did what she told me. Nothing happened. “I told
you I’m a regular human there is nothing special about me.” I looked
down ashamed and feeling sorry for myself. “I can’t leave you here to
die, so I’ll have to carry you to your house. Strength potion it is.” She
opened a camouflaged bag attached to her waist and took out some
fluid. Tearing open the lid, she guzzled the liquid. “Grab on to my
arm,” she demanded. I complied and before I knew it, she soared out
the classroom where at least a dozen monsters were ready to attack.
The mysterious girl manoeuvred past all of them until we were
outside. She began to gain altitude when a monster with grey skin,
black fire for hair, metal mismatched arms and a dress like a black
hole grabbed me. I began to panic and kick at the ugly beast. The girl
noticed the monstrosity and drew a music note with a flick and a
circle against the air. A bright blue energy oar zoomed towards the
attacker and blasted it into the ground making it let go of me.

“WHAT ON EARTH WAS THAT?” I questioned when the girl got
me to my house. “Sam, calm down.” She said in her serious voice. “I
WILL NOT CALM DOWN! How do you know my name? How do
you know where I live? Who are you? What were those things out
there? Why are they trying to kill me and what the heck in your right
mind thinks it’s alright to come to my school and say I’m not human
and I have wings?”
