Preface

21st century literature has helped me see the world

with new eyes. Literature is, in my opinion, the
definition of experience because, from what I can tell,
it is something that cannot be properly expressed in
words. I find it incredibly fascinating to experience
and understand things that I haven't personally
encountered but have only read about. Literature is
art because it contributes to society, it is unique, it
teaches us about the world we live in, the world from
the past, and even life lessons.

Literary

Analysis
I. Summary
This tale revolves around Rosa, a devoutly attractive housekeeper, is
the focus of this tale about adult infatuation. Rosa is shown to have
endured verbal and physical torture at the hands of her rude but
occasionally sympathetic mistress.

While out for an errand, on an incident she met a cochero who cared
for her swollen ankle. Rosa had fantasies about the cochero she
called "Angel" who was eventually identified as Pedro. She pictured
him as being distinct from other men, more gallant, softer, and her
savior from her wretched life with her mistress. Rosa's hope and the
personification of her longing to be free from captivity took the form of
Angel.

On the other hand, she was treated harshly and rudely by her
admirer Sancho, who also physically injured her. She fled from
Sancho's obnoxious embraces and her mistress's home. She was
desperate to track down her "Angel."

However, her so-called savior is merely something she made up with

her depressing life as a servant, he doesn't truly exist. Rosa
ultimately decides to accept her fate as an unhappy servant. Instead,
the man she thought would save her was the one who sent her back
to her miserable life.

III. Analysis

Regarding today's societal significance, Estrella Alfon's "Servant

Girl" illustrates the power the rich have over the poor. It tells the
story of Rosa, a mistreated maid who longs for freedom, joy, and
love. Since the beginning of the story, Rosa's powerlessness is
already presented, doing what the mistress tells her to do,
getting abused just because she made the mistress upset. The
mistress clearly has the power and money for her to do as she
pleases. It reveals to us the terrible reality that some of the
individuals working for those with greater social positions than
they do have, just like the Marxist Criticism. One faces
transgressions just because of their bosses' thoughts. Her
writing recounts Rosa's experiences working as a maid for an
exploiter. It shows the emotional ups and downs she
experiences, from grief to exhilaration at discovering an "Angel",
then back to her original frame of mind. Rosa has become
alienated because of her social standing, she is so poor that in
the end of the story she came back to her old miserable life as a
maid.
IV.Conclusion

Through Rosa's struggles and this literary work, I've

come to be more aware on how I treat others, to be

more empathetic, to treat others as my equal

regardless of their social standing. The author really

no doubt put meaning to this work.
