1.

The minimum detectable size:

Formula: S/D= Pixel size/ Lens Focus

S: Minimum length of one side

D: Distance between the target and the camera

For example, if using TP8 camera (35 micron, focus= 35mm) to detect an object at
50cm, the minimum detectable size is calculated as:

S/ 500mm= 0.035mm/ 35mm -> S= 0.5mm

So the minimum detectable size is S2= 0.25 mm2

Note: To detect a target, the target shall takes up at least 1 pixel of the camera.

2. The minimum measurable size:

Formula: S/D= (Pixel size * 3)/ Lens Focus

S: Minimum length of one side

D: Distance between the target and the camera

For example, if using TP8 camera (35 micron, focus= 35mm) to detect an object at
50cm, the minimum size that the camera can measure temperature is calculated as:

S/ 500mm= (0.035mm * 3)/ 35mm -> S= 1.5mm

So the minimum measurable size is S2= 2.25mm2

Note: To measure temperature of a target, the target shall takes up at least 3 pixels
respectively in horizontal & vertical direction.

3. To calculate the detection size at a certain detection distance (e.g. ?m wide at

800m far), there is a formula:

Tan(ω/2)= (S/2)/D

ω: FOV (Horizontal) or FOV(Vertical)

S: Length or Width of the detection size

D: Detection distance

For example: 100mm lens with detector (320*240, 45 microns), FOV=8.2º *6.2º,
distance= 800m

Tan(4.1º)=(Length/ 2)/ 800 Æ Length= ?

Tan(3.1º)= (Width/2)/ 800 Æ Width= ?

For our M4 with 12.6mm lens, its detector is 160*120, 35 microns, FOV= 24.3 º
*18.4 º.

To calculate the distance (if the target size is 0.5m*0.4m), you can do as follows:

Tan(24.3 º)= (0.5/ 2)/ D Æ D= ?

Tan(18.5 º)= (0.4/ 2)/ D Æ D= ?

For our TP8 with 35mm lens, its detector is 384*288, 35 microns, FOV= 21.74º
*16.39 º.

To calculate the size at 50m, you can do as follows:

Tan(10.87º)= (S/ 2)/ 50 Æ S= 19.2m

Tan(8.195 º)= (S/ 2)/ 50 Æ S= 14.4m
