Problem 2

• Solve Problem 2.A , if a9 is even

Problem 2.A (25 points)

Consider signal x1(t) with the following spectral components: { (20, -2j), (-20, 2j),
(40, 3), (-40, 3) } where the first number in each pair denotes frequency in Hz and
the second number is the complex spectral amplitude at that frequency.

(a) Find x1(t).

(b) Is x1(t) a periodic signal? If so, determine its fundamental period. If not,
explain why not.
(c) Now consider a new signal x2(t) with the following spectral components :
{ (40, -3j), (-40, 3j), (50, 3), (-50, 3) }. Plot the spectrum of
y(t) = x1(t) + 2x2(t).
(d) What is the fundamental frequency of y(t) = x1(t) + 2x2(t)?

• Solve Problem 2.B , if a9 is odd

Problem 2.B (25 points)

(45, 4), (-45, 4) } where the first number in each pair denotes frequency in Hz and
the second number is the complex spectral amplitude at that frequency.

(a) Find x1(t).

(b) Is x1(t) a periodic signal? If so, determine its fundamental period. If not,
explain why not.
(c) Now consider a new signal x2(t) with the following spectral components :
{ (20, -3j), (-20, 3j), (30, 2), (-30, 2)}. Plot the spectrum of
y(t) = 2x1(t) + x2(t).
(d) What is the fundamental frequency of y(t) = 2x1(t) + x2(t)?
