7. Demonstrate an understanding of fractions by using concrete, pictorial and symbolic representations
to: a) create sets of equivalent fractions, and b) compare fractions with like and unlike denominators.

Learning Objectives:
● At the end of the lesson, students will be able to
o use concrete representations of fractions in cooking measurements (cups, tablespoons,
teaspoons).
o demonstrate an understanding of fractions using a concrete representation by cutting a
tortilla shell into 12 equal pieces with a pizza cutter.

Assessments/Observations
● Measure the correct amount of cinnamon, sugar, and margarine using cooking units in fractions.
● Cut a tortilla shell into 12 equal pieces using a pizza cutter.

Materials
● Cinnamon Crisps Recipe
● Ingredients
○ margarine
○ tortillas
○ sugar
○ cinnamon
● Foods room (oven, kitchen utensils, etc.)

LESSON PLAN (55 minutes)

Introduction (15 minutes)


● Turn on ovens to 350 degrees as students are arriving in the classrooms.
● Read over the recipe with the students.
● Demonstrate how to use an oven correctly
o use oven mitts
o pull the door all the way down
o pull out the oven racks using oven mitts
o place the baking sheet on the racks
o push the rack back in
o close the oven door slowly so it doesn’t slam shut
● Students will break out into their kitchen groups. If there are absences, redistribute groups.
o assign a group leader for the day
o assign a group member to be in charge of washing

Cooking (35 minutes)


● As a group, students will send two students to the front to collect ingredients (Formative
assessment SLO #7)

● the teacher will distribute ingredients to the students


● Students will follow the directions on the recipe (Formative assessment SLO #7)
● During this time, the teacher will assist students as needed.
● Once the cinnamon crisps are in the oven, students can begin washing the dishes, cleaning off
the counters, and sweeping the floor.

Conclusion (5 minutes)
● Once each kitchen is cleaned, students can sit at their desks and eat their cinnamon crisps.

Sponge Activity
● Students can look up breakfast recipes that are five ingredients or less
