The Filipino Poetry

There are Filipino poetry forms that evolved over time. Spoken Word
Poetry or also known as Slam Poetry, is written on a page but is meant for onstage
performance. It empathizes the use of rhythm, improvisation, free association, rhymes,
wordplay, and slang. Textula/Textanaga is the combination of mobile text messaging
and tanaga that consists of four lines and seven syllables each. It can follow the rhyme
schemes Basic (AAAA), Enclosed or inipit (ABBA), Alternate or salitan (ABAB), and
Sunuran (AABB). Rap Battle or Flip Top battle is considered as the modern balagtasan
mixed with hip hop culture.

In Filipino poetry, there are different kinds of elements. The elements of

poetry are lines, which is a subdivision of a poem that contains a group of words
arranged into a row. Stanza, which is equivalent to the paragraph in prosaic writing.
Rhyme and Rhyme Scheme, rhyme refers to the repetition of the end-sounds of words
while the rhyme scheme is the way a poem’s rhymes are arranged. Rhythm and Meter,
rhythm is the term used to refer to the recurrence of stressed and unstressed sounds in
poetry while the meter is a system of describing what we can measure about the
audible features of a poem. Figurative language is words, phrases, or sentences that
contain meaning which deviates from their standard meaning. The guidelines in poetry
analysis are that we should read the poem aloud and read it several times, unpack what
the poem is about, pay attention to the rhythm, look for enjambment, look for
techniques, consider the poetic form, analyze the title, identify the speaker, identify the
mood and tone, and identify the theme of the poem.

The Filipino poetry exists within our culture and it is used every day, and
with the influence of other countries, the poetry forms expanded and Filipino writers get
to be more creative and expressive depending on what forms of poetry they use.
