which r, s, t should satisfy so as to have a local minimum, local maximum and saddle point at (a, b).

Ans. (i) Local minimum point (0, 0) and the value of f at (0, 0) is f(0, 0) = 0. (ii) Saddle point (0, 0) (iii) Local maximum point (-2, -2) and the
value of f at (-2, -2) in f(-2, -2) = 8.

(d) Find the points at which the absolute extreme values of the function f(x, y) = 2+ 2x + 2y- x 2 – y2 on the triangular plate in the first quadrant
bounded by the lines x = 0, y = 0, y = 9 –x exist. Also write values of the function at these points.

Ans. (d) Absolute minimum of f (x) occurs at the points (0, 9) and (9, 0) and is f(0, 9) = f(9, 0) = -61; Absolute maximum of f(x) occurs at
the point (1, 1) and is f (1, 1) = 4.

Q.3. Use the method of undermined multipliers to solve the problems given below:

(a) Find the point P(x, y, z) closest to the origin on (i) the plane 2x+y-z-5=0 and (ii) the hyperbolic cylinder x 2–z2–1 = 0.

Ans. (i) (5/3, 5/6, -5/6) Distance of P for the origin is  2.04. (ii) (± 1, 0, 0) distance of these point from the origin is 1.

(b) Find the points on the curve of intersection of the plane x+y+z=1 and the cylinder x 2+y2=1 closest or farthest from the origin.
Ans. The points closest to the origin are (1, 0, 0) and (0, 1, 0) and their distance from the origin is 1; And the point farthest from the origin is

(c) The temperature at a point (x, y) on a metal plate is T(x, y) = 4x 2 – 4xy + y2. An ant on the plane walks around the circle of radius 5
centered at the origin. What are the highest and lowest temperatures encountered by the ant?

Ans. The lowest temperature is 0º encountered at the points and the highest temperature is 125º

encountered at the points

cases:
