Module Title: G9MATHQ203- Radicals and Equations and Problems Page 2 of 11
involving Radicals
What is self-paced learning? – An approach with which learners hold the power or right to regulate
and control their own learning activities. Learners are in charge of their own learning processes with
autonomy. (Shimmer, 2007).
Here is a simple map of the topics that you will cover in this module.
1. Define a radical.
2. Write expressions with rational exponents as radicals and vice versa
3. State the basic properties of radicals.
4. Apply the properties of radicals in simplifying radicals
A. The symbol √𝟏, read as “the square root” is called a radical sign.
B. The number inside the radical sign is called radicand and the entire
expression is called a radical.
Example:
3
√12 ,
the entire expression is a radical expression
3 is the index
12 is the radicand
C. The Basic properties of radicals is found on page 195 of your textbook.
A. SIMPLIFYING RADICALS
What is a radical? What is a radicand? What is an index? What are the basic
properties of radicals? How are they derived? How are we going to find the roots
of a radical? How are we going to simplify radical expressions using the laws of
radicals? How do we know that the radical is in simplest form?
To help you answer these questions. Refer to your textbook on pages 193-195. Read and study
each example carefully which is given in detail then answer the activities that follows below.
Activity 1: Fill me in! Complete the table below. Identify the index and radicand if the
given is radical and identify the corresponding radical if the index and radicand are
given.
1. The radicand has no perfect nth power factor if the index of the
radical is n.
Activity 2: What’s my Simplest form? Simplify the following radicals using its
properties.
Week 5A - Session 3
Lesson 5: RADICALS (OPERATIONS)
Specific Objectives: At the lesson, the students should be able to:
What are like radicals? What are unlike radicals? When can you add or subtract
radicals? How are you going to add or subtract radicals?
To help you answer these questions. Refer to your textbook on pages 196-199. Study each example
carefully which is given in detail then answer the activities that follows below.
Activity 4: Simplify Me. Answer Enrichment, odd numbers 1-21 pages 203-204 of your
textbook.
Prepare for a short quiz 3 via Silid Aralan after the topic adding and subtracting
radicals.
Week 6B – Session 1
When can you multiply or divide radicals? How are you going to multiply or divide
radicals? What are conjugates?
To help you answer these questions. Refer to your textbook on pages 196-199. Study
each example carefully which is given in detail then answer the activities that follows
below.
Activity 5. Perform my Operation Answer Classwork, odd numbers 1-19 of page 200-201 of
your textbook.
Check your answers. Refer to the answer key.
Were you able to get at least 7 items correctly? If yes, then well done!
What is a radical equation? How are you going to solve equations involving
radicals? What are the steps that you need to follow? What are problems that
involves radicals? How are you going to solve it?
To help you answer these questions. Refer to your textbook on pages 205-210. Study each example
carefully which is given in detail then answer the activities that follows below.
Activity 7: What’s the value of 𝒙? Answer Classwork, numbers 1-10 of pages 210-
211 of your textbook.
Activity 8: Solve Me! Answer Practice, numbers 1-5 of page 211 of your textbook.
How was it? Check your answers. Refer to the answer key.
If you were able to answer at least 7 items correctly, well done!
Activity 10: What’s the Number? Answer the following word problems below. Show
your complete solution.
1. The square root of the sum of a number and 8 is 12. What is the number?
2. The square root of the sum of twice a number and 7 is 13. What is the number?
How was it? Check your answers. Refer to the answer key.
If you were able to answer at least 1 item correctly, well done!
