What is self-paced learning? – An approach with which learners hold the power or right to regulate
and control their own learning activities. Learners are in charge of their own learning processes with
autonomy. (Shimmer, 2007).

Here is a simple map of the topics that you will cover in this module.

involving Radicals
Week 5A – Sessions 1-2
Specific Objectives: At the lesson, the students should be able to:

1. Define a radical.
2. Write expressions with rational exponents as radicals and vice versa
3. State the basic properties of radicals.
4. Apply the properties of radicals in simplifying radicals

A. The symbol √𝟏, read as “the square root” is called a radical sign.
B. The number inside the radical sign is called radicand and the entire
expression is called a radical.
Example:
3
√12 ,
 the entire expression is a radical expression
 3 is the index
 12 is the radicand
C. The Basic properties of radicals is found on page 195 of your textbook.

A. SIMPLIFYING RADICALS

What is a radical? What is a radicand? What is an index? What are the basic
properties of radicals? How are they derived? How are we going to find the roots
of a radical? How are we going to simplify radical expressions using the laws of
radicals? How do we know that the radical is in simplest form?
To help you answer these questions. Refer to your textbook on pages 193-195. Read and study
each example carefully which is given in detail then answer the activities that follows below.

Activity 1: Fill me in! Complete the table below. Identify the index and radicand if the
given is radical and identify the corresponding radical if the index and radicand are
given.

RADICALS INDEX RADICAND

1. √5
2. 2 5𝑥
4
3. √12𝑧
4. 3 15
3
5. √5𝑚𝑛

Check your answers. Refer to the answer key.

Were you able to get at least 3items correctly? If yes, then well done!

A radical is in simplified form if the conditions below are satisfied.

1. The radicand has no perfect nth power factor if the index of the
radical is n.

2. The radicand does not contain a fraction. The denominator of a

rational expression does not contain a radical.

3. The index of the radical is in its lowest possible form.
