Introductory Chemistry A I – Lesson 06

Homework exercises

(due: Saturday 28 May 2022, 13:30 pm)

5 marks total

1) Explain which of F-, Ne, and Na+ has the largest radius, which has the smallest,
and why. (1 mark)

2) Explain why Ge has a lower electron affinity than Se. (1 mark)

3) Given the radii of Si and S are 118 and 104 pm, respectively, one might expect,
from Coulomb's Law, their ionization energies to differ by a factor of 16 x 1182 /
14 x 1042 = 1.47. In fact, their ionization energies differ by a factor of 10002 /
7862 = 1.62. Why? (1 mark)

4) Explain why all three data sets in the chart shown in Figure 14 (Miessler page 38;
reproduced on your class handout) have a local maximum at 4 electrons and a
minimum at 5 electrons. (2 marks)
