SUMMARY

This project will use linear algebra to project what future age distributions will be. From the

references above and the research done the group members have learnt a lot. The definitions of

the keywords were found and will be shown below:

 Leslie model of population growth (Leslie matrix): Leslie matrix is a discrete, age-

structured model of population growth of the females in a population.

 Eigenvalues: Eigenvalues are the special set of scalars associated with the system of

linear equations. The term, eigenvalue can be termed as characteristic value,

characteristic root, proper values or latent roots as well.

 Eigenvectors: An eigenvector is described as a non-vector wherein the matrix given is

multiplied and equated to the scalar multiple of the said vector. This is calculated

precisely for a square matrix.

 Diagonalization of matrices: Matrix diagonalization is the process of taking a square

matrix and converting it into a special type of matrix--a so-called diagonal matrix--that

shares the same fundamental properties of the underlying matrix. The eigenvalues of a

matrix are clearly represented by diagonal matrices- (a square matrix in which all the

elements are zero except the principal diagonal elements). A matrix O is called

diagonalizable if it is similar to a diagonal matrix C.

 Positive eigenvalues:

 Negative eigenvalues:

 Net Reproduction Rate: The net reproduction rate or Ro in a population ecology and

demography, is the average number of offspring that are more specifically daughters,

who would be born to a female, if she passes through her lifetime conforming to age

specific fertility and mortality rates of the given year. The net reproduction rate is like

gross reproduction rate but in here, some of the females will die before completing their

childbearing years is considered.

As for the problems assigned, the necessary information needed will be researched and the

calculations will be done using the MATLAB program.
