ATTRITION CELLS/SCRUBBERS
McLanahan Attrition Cells are optimal for industrial (frac, glass, sports) and mineral sands
to meet turbidity and color test requirements. They are designed to scrub the surfaces of
particulates, liberate deleterious materials and break down particulates associated with
durability. Particle-on-particle attrition created by a series of rotating paddles inside the
Attrition Cells allows surface contaminants such as clays, oxides and chemicals to be
removed. A variety of configurations are available, including multiple sizes and shapes, as
well as unique adjustable internal geometry.
How It Works
Material is typically fed by Separators™, Hydrosizers™ or Dewatering Screens at a high Direct-Drive Gear Boxes
density. Operating densities vary depending on the application but are typically in the
range of 72-75% solids by weight. To maintain correct operating density, dilution water
is automatically added at rising power draw. The material enters the Attrition Cell and by
displacement passes up through the tank, being subject to high velocity axial and radial
motion to best provide particle-on-particle scrubbing action. The material overflows the
top of the Attrition Cell after the scrubbing is complete. When run in a series, the material
will enter the top, transfer between cells on the bottom where the scrubbing process is
repeated and then overflow out the top of the second unit. When run with an odd number
of units, material will enter the bottom and discharge to the second cell on the top. The
second cell will discharge on the bottom, allowing the third cell to discharge from the top.
