At the beginning of the First Book of Samuel, a barren woman named Hannah becomes pregnant. After giving birth (to
Samuel), she sings a song:

And Hannah prayed: humbles and also exalts.


He raises the needy from the dust,
“My heart exults in the LORD, from the ash heap he lifts up the poor,
my horn is exalted by my God. To seat them with nobles,
I have swallowed up my enemies; and make a glorious throne their heritage.
I rejoice in your victory. He guards the footsteps of his faithful ones,
The bows of the mighty are broken, but the wicked shall perish in the darkness;
while the tottering gird on strength. for not by strength does one prevail.
The well-fed hire themselves out for bread The LORD’S foes shall be shattered;
while the hungry no longer have to toil. the Most High in heaven thunders;
The barren wife bears seven sons, the LORD judges the ends of the earth.
