Unit 2 Review: Lessons 2-1 through 2-5

Warm-Up: David looked at a passage from a book. He recorded the number of words in each sentence as shown
in the following frequency table.

Class interval Frequency

(number of words) f
1–5 16
6–10 28
11–15 26
16–20 14
21–25 10
26–30 3
31–35 1
36–40 0
41–45 2

(a) Answer the following questions:

(i) Which class is the modal class?

(ii) In which class is the median?

(b) Estimate, correct to the nearest whole number, the mean number of words in a sentence.

(c) Estimate, correct to 3 significant figures, the standard deviation of words in a sentence.
DIRECTIONS: Answer the following questions in order to review the Unit 2 content learned so far in class. You
are allowed to work individually or with a partner. Please show all work where possible. Unless otherwise
stated, leave the exact answer or round to 3 significant figures.

1. Classify the following variables as qualitative, quantitative discrete or quantitative continuous:

a) the time it takes to run 100 metres

b) the number of runs scored in a baseball game

c) the distance jumped by Jessica in the Olympic high jump

d) the height of the flowers in a garden

e) the mass of each apple in a grocery bag

f) the number of leaves on each branch of a tree

g) the items students ate for dinner

h) the arm spans of basketball players on a team

i) the amount of carbohydrates a person eats each day

2. The age in months at which a child first starts to walk is observed for a random group of children from a town
in Brazil. The results are

14.3, 11.6, 12.2, 14.0, 20.4, 13.4, 12.9, 11.7, 13.1.

(a) (i) Find the mean of the ages of these children.

(ii) Find the standard deviation of the ages of these children.

(b) Find the median age.

3. The boxplot below shows the statistics for a set of data.

2 4 6 8 10 12 14 16 18 20
data values
(a) For this data set write down the value of

(i) the median;

(ii) the upper quartile;

(iii) the minimum value present.

(b) Write down three different integers whose mean is 10.

4. The heights of 200 students are recorded in the following table.

Height (h) in cm Frequency

140 ≤ h < 150 2
150 ≤ h < 160 28
160 ≤ h < 170 63
170 ≤ h < 180 74
180 ≤ h < 190 20
190 ≤ h < 200 11
200 ≤ h < 210 2

(a) Write down the modal group.

(b) Calculate an estimate of the mean and standard deviation of the heights.
5. A marine biologist records as a frequency distribution the lengths (L), measured to the nearest centimetre, of
100 mackerel. The results are given in the table below.

Length of mackerel Number of

(L cm) mackerel
27 < L ≤ 29 2
29 < L ≤ 31 4
31 < L ≤ 33 8
33 < L ≤ 35 21
35 < L ≤ 37 30
37 < L ≤ 39 18
39 < L ≤ 41 12
41 < L ≤ 43 5

(a) State the modal interval length of the mackerel.

(b) Write down the values of

(i) the range;

(ii) the interquartile range.

(iii) the median

(c) Using your answer from part b, draw a box and whisker plot for this data.
6. In the following ordered data, the mean is 6 and the median is 5.

2, 2, 3, 4, 4, a, 8, 9, b, 12

Find each of the following

(a) the value of a;

(b) the value of b.

UNIT 1 REVIEW: Calculate 3.7 × 16.22 – 500, writing your answer

(a) correct to two decimal places;

(b) (i) correct to three significant figures;

(ii) in the form a × 10k, where 1 ≤ a < 10, k  .
