What are the connections between the author’s life and

the poetry book?
Ernest Hemingway’s life certainly influenced the writing of The
Old Man and the Sea. This book largely reflects similarities
about the author’s life since it recounts tense moments and great
struggle. For example, both the author and Santiago had not been
able to obtain what they wanted so much for years, such as
creating a successful novel and catching a fish.

What historical events / ideas motivated the author to

write this book?
The Old Man and the Sea is a small novel with big historical
significance. It was influenced by Hemingway’s urge for
adventure and his refusal to accept the claims that his writing
career was finished.

What lessons did you learn from this book?

The best lesson in this book is about persistence, it invites us to
reflect a lot on the courage we must have in certain complex
situations in life and to have a firm stance not to let ourselves be
defeated by them.

Do you feel identified with a character from the book?

Why?
I feel identified with Santiago since many times I feel like an
unfortunate person in this life, sometimes I feel that everything
that revolves around me is wrong and they do not give me the
result I hope for. However, I am always there fighting and facing
every problem that comes my way, trying to change all the bad
things into positive and fruitful things for my personal and
professional growth.

What emotions did I feel in my favorite part of the book?

Why?
First of all, my favorite part is when the old man comes home as
I consider that he was too brave and persistent in fighting for so
long without giving up. In addition to this, this is a clear example
that there is no greater rival than our own fears and that we
should never give up without trying. It is really exciting to see
that everything is achieved with great effort.
How does this book relate to my own life? Was it
relevant for me?
Clearly this book is very relevant to our lives as it invites us to be
very persistent with our dreams and purposes without having
defeat as an option.
