Linking words

In this video we are going to talk about linking words.

Linking words are words or phrases that help you connect ideas and sentences.
Some examples of linking words are: and, but, because, so.

AND:

1. Let's start with the linking word "AND".

Look at these two sentences:

 I had a notebook in my backpack.
 I had a book in my backpack.

Now listen: I had a notebook and a book in my backpack.

The linking word "and" joins similar ideas together.

Let's see more examples with AND:

 The students used Canvas and Zoom last semester.
 Luis and Ana met online last year.
 Juan and Alexandra left school in 2017.

BUT:

2. Now let's continue with the linking word "BUT".

Look at these two sentences:

 I want to visit Cusco.
 I don't have any money.

The sentences express opposite ideas: one in affirmative and the other in negative; it
means opposite ideas, right?
So, we use "BUT" to join two opposite ideas together.

Now listen: I want to visit Cusco, but I don't have any money.

Let's see more examples with BUT:

 I used Power Point, but I didn't use Prezzi last year.
 I didn't see my classmates face-to-face, but I met them online last year.
 We didn't have face-to-face classes, but we had online classes last semester.
BECAUSE:

3. Now let's talk about the linking word: "BECAUSE".

Look at these two sentences:

 I didn't do my presentation.
 I was tired.

I was tired is a reason for not doing the presentation:

Now listen: I didn't do my presentation BECAUSE I was tired.

So, in this example, we use because to express the reason for not doing the presentation.

Let's see more examples with BECAUSE:

 She didn’t go to school because she was sick.
 She connected to zoom because she had her oral evaluation.
 Today, technology is very important because it is used for almost everything.

SO:

4. Now let's talk about the linking word: "SO".

Look at these two sentences:

 She didn't study.
 She didn't pass the exams.

Now listen: She didn't study, SO she didn't pass the exam.

Using SO shows that the second idea is the result of the first.

Let's see more examples with SO:

 I don't have internet connection, so I can't use the Canvas platform.
 He had some more work to do, so he went home late.
 He wants to become a civil engineer, so he studies civil engineering at UTP.

That's it! Remember to continue practicing the correct use of the linking words: and, but,
because and so.
