A successful person

Two friends met in the cafeteria at UTP after a long time.

Lisa: Hi Bryan! How have you been?

Bryan: Hi Lisa! Great! Work has been non-stop lately though.

Lisa: I can imagine. I have to prepare an essay about a successful person for my Final
Assignment at university.

Bryan: Oh! That’s great! Why don’t you write about one of the most successful
Peruvian singer-songwriters?

Lisa: Oh? Who are you talking about?

Bryan: Susana Baca! She has built her career purely on the strength of her powerful and
moving voice. She has been a key figure in the revival of Afro-Peruvian music!

Lisa: Interesting! How did she become famous?

Bryan: She came to attention in 1995, when she sang with David Byrne, who is a famous
American singer.

Lisa: What about her music?

Bryan: Since the Byrne compilation, she has been to the US several times and released
several albums, including a solo album in Spanish: Del Fuego y del Agua!

Lisa: That’s fascinating! Has she won any award?

Bryan: Yes, she has won the Latin Grammy Award twice.

Lisa: Wow! She’s a real winner! I have become her fan just now.

Bryan: Haha! Sure. Her voice has been considered as soothing and electrifying.
She has given a voice to Afro-Peruvians and helped highlight their great contributions to
Peruvian Culture, as well as their status in it! Also, she has been Minister of Culture, she
was the second Afro-Peruvian to hold that office. That happened in 2011.

Lisa: Wow! I think that’s the real successful story I need for my Assignment.

Bryan: Yeah! There’s more too! With her husband she founded the Instituto
Negrocontinuo in Lima, which is dedicated to preserving Afro-Peruvian Culture.
Lisa: Oh wow! I love her courage and contributions to her country. Bryan! Thank you for
helping me with my Assignment. Now I want to listen to Susana’s new album.

Bryan: It’s no problem. I'm glad I could help.
