Percents Lesson 2 Class 1:

Objectives:

Intro - talk to students about what a percent is, its a number out of a hundred. 27% is 27/ 100, how
could you visualize that?

How could I find out the percentage of something that isnt 100? Like what percentage of our class is
girls and what percent is boys?
● You have to find your whole number, how many students are in our class?
● Find out how many of the students are boys, count 9
● Now we have to find the decimal
● Once I have my decimal it is easy to find my percent, I just have to multiply it by 100
● So now that I have my percent of boys in the class, how could I get the percent of girls?

First task - in groups have students find out what percentage of the students in the class have blond
hir, brown hair and black hair
● How could you represent this visually?
● Hundreds blocks

Second task - so there are three ways to represent a number out of 100, you could use a percentage,
a fraction, or a decimal
● Which is more, 23% of 71, or 71% of 23?
○ If I bring a two bags of candy to school, on has 71 pieces and the second had 23 which
bag would you want me to bring you?
○ Now what if I told you that if I brought bag 1 then they would only get 23% of that
candy. The other 77% would be going to the rest of the school. With the second bag,
they would only be able to have 71% of the candy. Which bag would they want so that
they could have the most candy?

Closure - sharing the knowledge

● Have students come to gether and explain to eachother how they figured out the anwer, or
simply to hear different ways of practicing.
