Test I. Balancing Nuclear Reaction.
Directions: Write the balanced nuclear equations for the reaction in each of the
following statement. Write your answer in the space provided.
Use a periodic table to predict the answer.
1. Rutherford’s experiment on alpha particle reacted with nitrogen nucleus to form oxygen
plus proton.

7N
14 + 2a4  8O15 + 1p1
2. Americium- 241 radioactive element used in smoke detector, decays to form alpha particle.

95Am
241  93Np
237 +
2He
4

3. Mercury-201 reacts by capturing an electron.

80Hg
201 + -1e0  79Au
201

Test II. Problem Solving.

Directions: Solve the following problems systematically. Write your solution in the
space provided for.
1. If the half life of iodine -131 is 8.0 days, how much a 100 mg sample I- 131 remained after
32 days.
Solution:
final mass = initial mass x (½ )t/t ½
= 100 mg x (0.5)32 days/8 days
= 100 mg x 0.0625
final mass = 6.25 mg

2. The intensity of any radiation decreases with the square of the distance from the source.
If the intensity of radiation is 36.0 millicurie (mCu) at a distance of 2.0 cm. What is the
intensity if the distance is 4.0 m.?

3. A rock has found to contain 5.51 mg of uranium-238 and 1.63 mg of lead-206. Determine
the age of the rock. The half life of U-238 is 4.51 x 10 9 years.
Solution:
ln N1/ln U-238
lnN2 = -K t
K = 0.693/4.51 x 109 yrs = 1.54 x 10-10/yr
ln5.51 mg/ln1.63 mg = 1.54 x 10-10/yr(t)
-3.493 = (-1.54 x 10-9yr-1)(t)
t = 2.27 x 109 yrs

4. A solution containing 3 grams of gold was electrolyzed at 0.2 ampere , which causes the
metallic gold to deposit on the platinum cathode. How many percent of gold remains in
gold chloride solution after 10 minutes. During the reduction process at the cathode, the
reaction is : Au3 + 3e-  Auo
Solution:
C = At
= (0.2 A)(600 s)
C = 120 C
120 C x 1 F/96,485 C = 0.00124 F
0.00124 F x 1 mole e-/1 F = 0.00124 mole e-
Au = 0.00124 mole e- x 1 mole Au/3 mole e- = 0.0004 mole Au
0.0004 mole Au x 196.97 g Au/1 mole Au = 0.079 g Au
0.079 g/3 g x 100 = 2.63%

5. How many coulombs would it take to deposit 10 grams of copper through a copper sulfate
solution in a coin. At the cathode, the reaction is : Cu+2 + 2e-  Cuo
Solution:
10 g Cu x 1 mole Cu/63.55 g Cu = 0.15 mole Cu
0.15 mole Cu x 2 mole e-/1 mole Cu = 0.3 mole e-
0.3 mole e- x 1 F/1 mole e- = 0.3 F
0.3 F x 96,485 C/1 F = 28,945.5 C

6. How many grams of zinc would be deposited by 96.5 coulomb at the cathode, the reaction
is : Zn +2 + 2e-  Zn o
Solution:
C = 96.5 C
96.5 C x 1 F/96,485 C = 0.001 F
0.001 F x 1 mole e-/1 F = 0.001 mole e-
Zn = 0.001 mole e- x 1 mole Zn/2 mole e- = 0.0005 mole Zn
0.0005 mole Zn x 65.38 g Zn/1 mole Zn = 0.033 g Zn
