Read the text carefully then do the activities that follow:

Countries have been working to achieve peace in the world. However various areas across the globe are
still suffering from war and its cruel consequences. This failure in attaining world peace is somehow related to the
western double standard as stated by some media sources.

A double standard arises when two or more people, groups, organizations, circumstances, or events are treated
differently even though they should be treated the same way. A double standard "implies that two things which
are the same are measured by different standards".

Even though this phenomenon is deeply rooted historically some late events pushed it on the surface. Despite the
similarities of some cases the western world treated them differently. First example would be the Russian
invasion of Ukraine which the western world rejected and imposed all sorts of sanctions on Russia for committing
war crimes, on the other hand, the westerners never condemned the Israeli crimes committed against the
Palestinians.

The second example is the criticisms surrounding Qatar's capacity and worthiness to hold the FIFA World
Cup. Media in England France and other countries called for boycotting Qatar World Cup accusing it of violating
the human rights. The same media kept quiet when Russia organized the world cup.
