Practice CAEP R1.3

ACCESS, PLAN FOR INSTRUCTION, AND USE A VARIETY OF
INSTRUCTIONAL STRATEGIES.

Evidence
I use the "Reading
Strategies Book" by
Jennifer Sarravallo to
teach different reading
strategies related to
fluency.

Narrative
I was able to use the "Reading
Strategies Book" to teach reading
fluency. I started with "reading
robots" where the students read
aloud, and then they read in a robot
voice with robot-like pauses. This will
help them see that they are lacking in
fluency and sound more robotic. Then
they will practice reading into a
"fluency phone" where they will be
able to hear the echo of themselves
and practice proper fluency.

Reflection

When teaching the students reading strategies

for fluency it is important they know what
fluency means. A lot of them do not understand
the term fluency, which I found out the hard
way. It was important to establish what fluency
was, and what I was looking for in order for
them to understand and be successful. It was
also very important to stress that fluency is not
reading as fast as they possibly can. A lot of my
students lacked grade-level fluency and this
was a perfect lesson to teach them what they
sound like because they never truly get to hear
themselves read. Using the strategies found in
the book gives me ideas for lessons that will be
affective, while also helping me teach toward
the students IEP goal.
