Design of seating principles
1) The seating design should allow the sitter to change posture
 The postures changes are necessary for blood to flow properly to
different parts of body

 Seats that distribute the load to be thighs

will inhibit blood flow in the legs,
and caused “cramped” problem

2
Design of seating principles
2) The primary region of weight distribution should be in the
buttocks, with greatest distribution under the persons bony
protuberances of the pelvis

3
3) The height of the seat should be adaptable to specific users if
possible
4) More seat depth is needed for long term seating than for short
term seating

4
5) The chair should provide support the lumbar region of the sitter’s
back

5
Design of seating principles (cont.)
5) Space should be provided under the seat and in front of the
person for their feet

6
6) Flat footrests should be provided for stools and high chairs

7
7) Chairs must be matched to the use related context.

8) Typical multi purpose chairs are adequate for many applications,

but do not meet requirements of offices
i. Comfort seating
ii. Elderly users
8
Does this stool for seating is met human factors or ergonomics?
Please discuss.

i. The seat is hard and relatively flat, this may

become uncomfortable over longer periods
of sitting

ii. Instead, one might mould the seat pan to fit the
human buttocks and provide padding for comfort

9
Class activity
i. Please form a group consists of 3 or 4 students
ii. Discuss the ergonomics issues that might a rise for each chair
design in the lecture room.
iii. Please make suggestions for improvement
