Rice Husk Ash Lowers Production Cost of Geopolymers

By Adrian ThompsonFeb 22 2022Reviewed by Skyla Baily

A new paper posted to the preprint server Research Square*, in submission to the

journal Environmental Science and Pollution Research, has explored the use of rice husk
ash as a potentially low-cost, more sustainable source of active silicon dioxide – an essential
component in geopolymer production.

Study: Replacement of sodium silicate-based alkali activator by rice husk ash in geopolymer

production. Image Credit: Sakdinon Kadchiangsaen/Shutterstock.com

Geopolymers are widely considered to be one of the most promising alternatives to Ordinary
Portland Cement (OPC) – a common construction material that exhibits excellent mechanical
properties but requires a considerable amount of energy and raw materials to produce, making
this highly unsustainable.

Daily Global, Regional & Local Rice E-Newsletter

As well as requiring a significant amount of energy to produce (thus making it an expensive

option), OPC production involves substantial greenhouse gas emissions, meaning that its
production is not in line with the current, urgent drive to move to more environmentally friendly
and carbon-neutral construction materials.

The centrality of OPC to the construction industry has prompted a great deal of interest, with a
number of researchers looking into environmentally-friendly materials which exhibit higher
engineering properties than OPC. This work has led to the development of geopolymer as a
potential replacement for OPC.

Geopolymer can be understood as an inorganic alumino-silicate powder that is based on

geological material. This powder reacts with an alkaline activator to form a binder via a process
of polycondensation. Geopolymer exhibits a form that is amorphous to semi-crystalline,
featuring three-dimensional Si-O-Al polymeric networks.

A number of complex raw materials have been evaluated for use as the solid component in
geopolymer. The paper’s authors cite examples including fly ash, clay, red mud, slag, hydrate
lime, and a range of other types of industrial waste.

Because clay is an alumino-silicate material possessing a total of 70-90 wt% of Al2O3 and

SiO2 as Kaolinite phase, the material’s kaolinite crystal structure can be transformed into a
highly reactive amorphous structure of metakaolin. Calcined clay has seen regular use as an
alumino-silicate source in clay-based geopolymers.

It was also noted that it is possible to employ a mixture of sodium hydroxide (NaOH) and
sodium silicate as an alkali liquid reactant, facilitating the dissolution of alumino-silicate
material and delivering a geopolymerization reaction which results in a geopolymer with
excellent compressive strength. Unfortunately, this process is complex and can be expensive,
meaning it is not ideal for large-scale geopolymer production.

In an effort to move away from industrial waste to other, more affordable materials, agricultural
waste has proven to offer excellent promise for geopolymer production due to its high silicon
(SiO2) content. One notable example of this – and the focus of the study – is rice husk ash, which
has been found to contain between 87 and 95 wt.% of SiO2 depending on the method used to
synthesize this.

The rice husk ash is suitable for use as a direct replacement to the aforementioned Calcine clay,
representing a viable, environmentally friendly, and more affordable option in the development
of geopolymers with high compressive strength.

In order to further test this assertion and optimize the geopolymer properties achievable via the
use of rice husk ash, the paper’s authors worked to synthesize sodium silicate from rice husk ash,
with a view to employing this in the fabrication of Metakaolin-based geopolymer. These
geopolymers were designed to possess SiO2/Al2O3 ratios of 1.58 - 1.95.

Having developed the geopolymers using rice husk ash, these were evaluated in terms of their
geopolymerization, compressive strength, microstructure, and structural phases.

SiO2/Al2O3. Image Credit: Siriwan C et al., Research Square

Their analysis showed that once it had been cured at room temperature for a 24-hour period, the
geopolymer with a SiO2/Al2O3 ratio of 1.95 demonstrated excellent compressive strength (25
MPa) – the highest of those evaluated and actually higher than the minimum requirement for
OPC.

These findings represent a robust basis for further study and offer a promising means of
replacing a vital yet unsustainable component of an essential construction material with a more
sustainable alternative.

Not only that, but the substitution of a clay-based material with an agricultural by-product could
represent considerable cost savings for manufacturers of these materials while simultaneously
improving its mechanical properties.

“Frontiere was developed at the LSU AgCenter and has 53 percent more protein than typical
long grain rice and a lower glycemic index, which is great for people who need to closely
monitor their blood glucose levels,” said show co-host Dr. Steve Linscombe, who had a hand in
the variety’s development.

Registered and Licensed Dietitian Mandy Armentor joined Dr. Herry Utomo on the podcast to
explain what makes the rice variety unique.

Foods with a low gylcemic index increase blood sugar more slowly and evenly than a high
glycemic index food. Closely controlling blood sugar is important, particularly for those with
Type I or II diabetes.

“You can’t throw caution to the wind, but if you removed rice from your diet because of blood
glucose concerns, you can probably start to put it back in slowly,” Armentor said.

Going from the labs of the LSU AgCenter to supermarkets and tables was an interesting journey
and Illinois rice farmer Blake Gerard and Louisiana rice farmer Michael Fruge, who both grow
and market the rice, share their part in it and their perspectives.

Gerard’s rice is marketed under the name Cahokia, a nod to the native American tribes that first
farmed the land he’s on now. Fruge’s is called Parish Rice and hails from St. Landry Parish.

“It’s worth noting that Blake and Michael were in the same Rice Development Leadership
class,” added Linscombe who now also manages that program for The Rice Foundation. “Good
things and opportunities come out of participation just as much as a deeper understanding for the
rice industry does.”

22.12 lakh tonnes rice deposited in Central pool

Wednesday, 23 February 2022 | Staff Reporter | RAIPUR

The Chhattisgarh government has stepped up efforts to deposit rice in the central pool.  Over
22.12 lakh tonnes of quality rice have been deposited so far.

According to the Food Department, this includes 12.11 lakh tonnes deposited in the Food
Corporation of India and 10 lakh tonnes in the Civil Supplies Corporation.

The paddy procurement was followed by lifting for custom milling at a rapid pace across the
state. A total of 79.82 lakh tonnes of paddy have been lifted by the millers till Monday, an
official communiqué said on Tuesday.

Food Secretary Topeshwar Verma said in a statement that just like paddy procurement, the work
of paddy lifting for custom milling is being done rapidly.

A record 79.82 lakh tonnes of paddy have been lifted so far. Verma The millers have lifted 59.12
lakh metric tonnes from the procurement centers.

The work of paddy lifting from paddy procurement centers and custom milling is being
conducted on a war footing. This year, a target has been set to deposit 61.65 lakh tonnes of Arva
rice in the Central pool.

No end to inflation in sight, as millers demand hike in flour

prices
By Khalid Iqbal

February 23, 2022

Rawalpindi : Due to hefty hike in POL prices, the flourmill owners have demanded an increase
in the price of flour (atta) by Rs50 on a 20-kilogram bag.

The prices of all basic items particularly kitchen items such as rice, cooking oil, meat, chicken,
and all kinds of vegetables and fruits have continuously been rising here.

Multinational companies are also increasing the prices of their products including soaps,
shampoos, powdered milk, pampers, biscuits, noodles, etc. on regular basis but nobody is taking
action to keep a check on prices.

All Pakistan Flourmills Welfare Association (Punjab) Chairman Tahir Hanif Malik Tuesday
demanded an increase in prices of a 20-kilogram atta bag by Rs50. He said that the government
has made a hefty hike in POL prices therefore, their cost has also increased. The government is
revising electricity prices, POL prices, and increasing packing material prices on a regular basis.
The grinding cost is continuously rising on regular basis, therefore we demand of the
government to revise the ex-mill price of ‘atta’, he added

Deputy Director (Food) spokesman Muhammad Ali has admitted all facts and figures saying
flourmill owners have demanded to increase the prices of atta. He said that the Punjab
government has fixed ex-mill prices of atta at Rs1075 and retail shopkeepers could sell it at
Rs1100.

After a hefty increase in POL prices, the prices of rice also jumped to 215 per kilogram against
Rs190, the prices of chicken are continuously soaring and 1-kilogram chicken meat is selling
over Rs400 against Rs350. One kilogram of tomato is being sold at Rs150 against Rs120, one
kilogram of garlic is selling at Rs400 against Rs200, one-kilogram ginger is available at Rs200.
The prices of all kinds of vegetables and fruits have also witnessed increase on daily basis.

The reliable sources told ‘The News’ that ghee/cooking oil dealers have demanded to further
increase the prices of commodities by Rs80 per kilogram. The dealers of ghee/cooking oil have
once again stopped supply to utility stores and open markets to increase the prices, the sources

said. The sources also said that all branded and non-branded companies without any permission
are increasing the prices of their products on daily basis.

Wholesalers continue to supply pulses, rice, ghee, cooking oil, and other items at higher prices in
the open market than the government’s fixed rates.

Prices of pet food and millet have also been increased and the prices of beef and mutton have
also gone up.

Sadhan said the government is ready to import rice if it’s needed to keep the market stable. So
those who are thinking of hoarding the food grains to manipulate market should refrain from it,
he added.
He said there is no logic behind hike in the rice price as this year’s harvest has been satisfactory
unlike last year when cyclone Amphan damaged crops.
“We won’t tolerate any manipulation with the price,” he said pointing to mill owners and traders.
The minister also asked the authorities concerned to investigate whether any licensed rice trader
is involved in storing rice illegally. Strict action will be taken against wrong-doers, he said.
Abdul Hannan, a spokesperson for mill owners, said the price of fine rice can’t be reduced as its
demand is high.
He also urged the government to take steps in importing rice to stabilise the market.

The LCCI President said, "We, from the platform of Lahore Chamber of Commerce and

Industry, always strive for developing and strengthening close working relations with
foreign business communities. He said that Lahore Chamber firmly believer of trade diplomacy
and for that matter, we also regularly interact with foreign counterparts. It is needless to mention
that Iran is closest to our hearts." Mian Nauman Kabir said that Iran and Pakistan have always
enjoyed smooth development of friendly and neighborly relations as well as mutually beneficial
cooperation. "We take Iran as an important neighbouring country and a potential trading partner.
We have been maintaining strong cultural and diplomatic relations with Iran," he added.
The LCCI president said that both the countries have large domestic markets and unique geo-
strategic competitive advantages but we have yet to enhance our trade volume by making good
use of these opportunities.
He informed the Iranian counterparts that Lahore Chamber had been voicing in favor of
exploring new avenues other than bilateral trade for the sake of enhancing cooperation between
two countries.
He said the key purpose of visit to Iran was to explore the Iranian markets for further developing
the trade and investment opportunities between the two countries.
Mian Nauman Kabir said the importance of such interaction was hard to be measured as these
kinds of meetings cause to arrange more and more follow up meetings which ultimately lead to
establish long lasting trade and economic relations.
The constant exchanges of business delegations between Pakistan and Iran was one of the key
indicators that both the nations seriously want to seize the increasing trend occurring in balance
of trade for the last five years or so.
The LCCI president said that Pakistan was inviting foreign investors in many of its sectors
where Iran, being the next door neighbor, could take full benefit of the available opportunities.
These sectors were renewable energy, construction & housing, China Pakistan Economic
Corridor (CPEC) and Railways, he said. Moreover, in the manufacturing sector automotive,
retail market, electronics & other electric equipment, pharmaceutical, industrial and commercial
machinery etc., were picking up, he added.

He said the potential sectors where Pakistan and Iran could enhance trade were value-

added textiles, pharmaceuticals and rice. Iran was one of the biggest consumers of Denim in the
region while Pakistani rice had a strong market in Iran. There was also a great potential for both
countries to initiate joint ventures in the field of energy, he added.
While talking to Ambassador of Pakistan in Iran Rahim Hayat Qureshi, LCCI President Mian
Nauman Kabir said that Pakistan and Iran had been steady trading partners but with every
passing year the bilateral trade was declining. "We are concerned about constant fall in
our exports to Iran which used to be around Dollar 426 million in 2008. In 2021, its level went
down to almost nothing which calls for taking immediate measures", he added.
He hoped business meetings with Iranian counterparts would play a key role in reviving the
national exports to Iran Mian Nauman Kabir said that it goes without saying that our Embassies
along with their subsidiary consulate offices have certain role to play to facilitate
the business community of Pakistan who were very eager to develop trade relations with their
counterparts in major economies.
Ambassador of Pakistan in Iran Rahim Hayat Qureshi said the business community ofPakistan
would be facilitated to enhance trade between Pakistan and Iran.

Chef JJ Johnson is making rice cool again — and serving it

to low-income communities

This New York City chef just received Series A funding to expand with the underserved in mind

Chef JJ Johnson believes rice is a universal ingredient that unites everyone, reaching across
financial divides and building community. That idea is the driving force behind his three-unit,
New York City-based concept FieldTrip, which not only aims to serve wholesome, affordable
food, but also to serve communities that don’t have access to such things.

The FieldTrip menu boasts bowls between $8 and $13 featuring a variety of rice types and
proteins like fried chicken, BBQ brisket and salmon. The first location opened in New York’s
Harlem neighborhood, as Johnson imagines going into more low-income neighborhoods and
serving those underserved communities with accessible, delicious food. That’s one of the reasons
he opened FieldTrip as a fast-casual restaurant.

“That dollar that somebody spends, they have to trust you that it actually is going somewhere,”
he said of how small businesses put money back into the local economy. “Hopefully people see
that with us and feeding [our] communities.”

As Johnson is a James Beard Award winning chef, the menu boasts chef-crafted bowls. But he
pared back the menu into something scalable and efficient so he could hit the right price point.
After all, nobody was going to pay $25 for a rice bowl, he said.

Of launching the concept in Harlem, Johnson said, “Let's put it in a community where people
know who I am, where I have family, so people trust me, and [use] an ingredient that connects us
all.”

Since the first unit opened in 2019, Johnson has been able to expand with the help of his
community and private investors who believe in the vision of the restaurant and him. But late last
year he received an undisclosed amount of money from an investment group.

Johnson was already creating an investor deck when he was approached by Nick Marsh, CEO of
Founders Table Restaurant Group, which counts Chopt and Dos Toros among its investments.
That led to the pair collaborating on a Series A funding that FieldTrip received in December.

This wasn’t the first cash influx Johnson had been offered. Johnson had previously been
approached by an unnamed rapper who wanted massive and quick expansion, something
Johnson wasn’t ready for at the time.

But now he feels it’s the right time. The undisclosed amount in the Series A will help FieldTrip
expand to 10 locations over the next five years.

“People say hard work pays off, or the good guy gets the money. In this instance, I felt like it

Johnson.

Especially for a young Black man from Harlem, he said. “Hopefully, it brings hope to young
black entrepreneurs from around the country and around the world, who say, ‘I can go out and

  21 Feb 2022

ISLAMABAD: Finance Minister Shaukat Tarin claimed on Sunday “Pakistan is least costly
among the 139 countries of the world”, though the opposition leaders rejected the claim and
severely criticised the government over unprecedented inflation inflicted on people during the
past over three-and-a-half years.

Sharing the screenshots of the latest Number’s cost of living index on his official Twitter handle,
he said Pakistan was the cheapest country among the 139 countries of the world.

Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) President Maulana Fazlur Rehman said how the
government could claim that Pakistan was a cheap country while people had been committing
suicides due to price-hike, joblessness and very high cost of living in the country.

In reaction to the finance minister statement, he said such claims were contradictory to the on-
ground situation and the ‘selected’ government would be sent packing soon, with the help of the
masses.

The finance minister said it was not the government claims but Numbeo's - the world’s largest
cost of living database, which declared Pakistan least costly country among 139 nations.
According to the Numbeo index, on average, the family of four people in Pakistan costs around
Rs171,783.24 per month (without rent), while a single person’s estimated monthly costs are
Rs51,798.76 (without rent).

The database estimated that the cost of living in Pakistan is, on average, 71.52% lower than in
the United States. Similarly, it said the residence rent in Pakistan is, on average, 90.64% lower
than in the United States.

According to the Numbeo database, the average price of milk per litre in Pakistan is Rs122.56,
that of rice per kg is Rs159.07, and eggs per dozen is Rs175.04. Likewise, the price of chicken
meat per kg in Pakistan is Rs393.45 per kg, beef Rs645.1 per kg, apples Rs170 per kg, oranges
Rs115.29 per kg, tomatoes Rs77.86 per kg, potatoes Rs55.16 per kg, onion Rs52 per kg, water
(1.5-litre bottle) Rs61.01, and cigarettes 20 pack (Marlboro) Rs250.

In transportation, the Numbeo database has estimated the average price of the one-way tickets
(local transport) at Rs40, taxi start (normal tariff) Rs150, taxi per km (normal tariff) Rs36.61,
and Toyota Corolla sedan new car at Rs3.24 million.

Similarly, the price of basic utilities (electricity, heating, cooling, water, garbage) for an 85 m2
apartment is around Rs11,425,43 per month, price of one minute of prepaid mobile tariff local is
Rs2.67, that of the internet (unlimited monthly data) Rs3,596.98, one pair of jeans (levis or
similar) Rs2,527, summer dress in chain store Rs3,980, pair of Nike running shoes (mid-range)

centre in Pakistan, on average is Rs20,341, apartment (1 bedroom) outside of centre
Rs12,999.81, apartment (3 bedrooms) in city centre Rs45,441, and apartment (3 bedrooms)
outside of the centre is Rs28,861. The per square metre to buy an apartment in the city centre
costs around Rs131,744 while the average cost per square metre apartment outside the city centre
is Rs73,749.

The Numbeo website says it received around 1,0285 entries in the past 12 months from 794
different contributors. It added that the data was last updated in the current month.

Separately, speaking in Radio Pakistan’s current affairs programme, Shaukat Tarin said Prime
Minister Imran Khan was following his vision to empower the people of Pakistan on the pattern
of Riyasat-e-Madina. A number of schemes have been launched for common man like health
card, Ehsaas portal and other schemes, he said. “Prime Minister is an upright and transparent
person unlike previous rulers, who made money through corrupt practices,” he claimed.

Also, State Minister for Information & Broadcasting Farrukh Habib on Sunday said the
government had chalked out a comprehensive strategy to provide loans to each and every family
with low income to enable them get their own shelter through different policies announced by
the PTI government.

He was addressing the oath-taking ceremony of newly-elected members of Jhang Union of
Journalists at Jhang Press Club. He said Kamyab Jawan programme was also linked with
Housing Project so that low-income people could get housing loans for 3 to 7 years duration. He
said that past rulers only gave lollipop to people, however, the PTI government was taking
practical steps for welfare and betterment of masses.

He said the government was concentrating to equip youth with hi-tech certification under “Skill
for All” programme so that they could start their own business instead of running behind jobs.

Minister for Energy Hammad Azhar said that prices of furnace oil, coal and LNG are higher,
people will have to bear fuel price adjustment.

Addressing a ceremony in Lahore, he said that the PTI would win local bodies elections in
Punjab. “PTI is not the political party of thieves,” he added.

Hammad Azhar said that Prime Minister constructed shelter homes. “The world is affected due
to storm of inflation. When there will be less inflation on international level, we will give relief
to people,” he added.

He said that fuel price adjustment on electricity bills is because of policies of previous
governments. “They have implanted costly projects of LNG and coal. Today, we have to
purchase LNG and coal on higher prices,” he maintained.

The minister said the national economy was progressing rapidly. “Prime Minister Imran Khan’s
visit to Russia contains historic value,” he added.

Minister for Information and Broadcasting Chaudhry Fawad Hussain on Sunday took opposition
to the task for selecting an inappropriate time to hold the so-called power show against the
government in Rawalpindi where the Australian cricket team would be playing the first test
match of its tour against Pakistan.

He, in a tweet, said Aussies and green shirts would be having the first cricket test series at
Pakistan in 23 years.

The whole nation was celebrating the revival of such cricket in the country, but it was only the
“hodgepodge” opposition that felt uncomfortable and planning a so-called power show on ‘rent’,
he added.

Are you an investor in Pakistan? Are you looking for a new idea where you can invest your
money and reap significant profits? If you are, then you must not look further than Asif Ali
Gohar, who is set to change the vegan leather market.

If Pakistan wants to stay competitive in the international leather market and maintain its position,
it needs to jump on the vegan bandwagon. Here is everything you need to know about Asif Ali
Gohar and his idea.

Who Is Asif Ali Gohar?

33 | w w w . r i c e p l u s s . c o m , w w w . r i c e p l u s m a g a z i n e . b l o s g s p o t . c o m

Asif Ali Gohar was born in Karachi, Pakistan, in 1992. However, his family did not stay too long
in Pakistan as everyone moved to Hamburg, Germany, when Asif was twelve years old. Of
course, at the time, Asif was young and trying to find his bearings in a new country.

By the time Asif turned fifteen, he had given up meat and started leading a vegan lifestyle. That
is because he did not like that we kill animals to fulfill our hunger desire. So, he made a decision
and stuck to it, which led to him finding his purpose.

An Interest In Vegan Alternatives To Leather

During Asif’s high school times, he received a project that boosted his interest in vegan
alternatives to leather. After graduating from high school, Asif enrolled in the University of
Hamburg and began his majors in business administration. That is the time when Asif began his
experimentation with vegan leather.

Each day, Asif used to come home and test rice as a vegan substitute for leather. After
consistency and hard word, Asif found a way to convert rice into a leather slime. However, Asif
also uses acetic acid bacteria and yeast to solidify the rice and give it a leather texture.

Why Asif Chose Rice As A Vegan Substitute To Leather?

Asif chose rice because of his roots and heritage. Pakistan is a major exporter of leather as it
exports leather at a total value of more than $870 million. That comes to over 4% of the GDP of
Pakistan, making it one of the world’s leading leather producers and exporters.

On the other hand, Pakistan is also the tenth biggest rice exporter in the world. It producers over
8% of the total world rice trade. Because of these reasons, there is a lot of knowledge of leather
and rice among Pakistani manufacturers and producers.

Asif wants to acquire knowledge and funding from Pakistani investors so that he can grow his
venture and help it take off in no time. All Pakistani investors can benefit from this as it will help
them stay ahead in the international vegan leather market.

Final Words

If you are a leather manufacturer or rice producer in Pakistan, you can contact Asif Ali Gohar to
work with him and help him in this venture. On the other hand, if you are an investor, you will
reap high profits from this idea. Vegan leather is the future, and that future is here.

Uncertainty discouraging investment into local rice

industry
Importation of rice is affecting local producers

Investors are reluctant to pump money into the

local rice value chain due to the benchmark
values policy that has made imported rice
cheaper than rice produced in the country. The
policy allows rice, along with other products that
can be produced domestically, be imported at
discounted duties, thereby making them cheaper
than rice grown in the country.

This, according to the Ghana Rice Inter-Professional Body (GRIB), is negatively affecting
investments into the local rice value chain.

“We have rice that we cannot sell, simply because the local market has been taken over by
cheaper imports due to the benchmark discount policy."

“It makes our rice very, very expensive because we are competing with someone in Thailand and
elsewhere who is able to borrow at 3 percent interest or zero interest and we are borrowing at
over 20 percent; how can you compete with such a person?” GRIB’s President, Nana Adjei Arye
II, told the B&FT in Accra.

He also revealed that farmers are having a hard time finding off-takers for last year’s harvest
because imported rice has become cheaper due to the benchmark discount policy.

This, Mr. Arye added, is affecting investments into the value chain due to the uncertainty in
policy direction.

“We want the government to make it difficult for importers to bring rice into the country. This
would help create a market for the local producers and create a lot of jobs for the youth and
women,” he urged.

Avnash, a local processor of rice and oil palm, also told this paper that it had to shut down its
rice processing plant in the Northern Region because of unfair trade practices brought about by
the benchmark policy in the last nine months to November last year.

Wilmar, which has the capacity to produce 300,000 metric tonnes of oil palm annually more than
Ghana’s 200,000mt annual consumption, said it was producing about 70 percent of its capacity
before the introduction of the policy, but is now doing less than 50 percent due to impacts of the
policy, its General Manager Kwame Wiafe said earlier.

Similarly, the Association of Ghana Industries – the umbrella body of local manufacturers which
has been critical of the policy because it encourages importation to the detriment of local
production warned earlier this year that many producers are finding it difficult to retain their
employees with such an influx of imports at cheap prices, which is displacing their products on
the market.

“The benchmark discount policy in its current form could worsen the unemployment situation.
The future of our country and our youth should guide us in our quest to promote policies which
spur economic growth, industrialization and sustainable job creation,” its President, Humphrey
Ayim-Darke, said last month.

He added that many of its members are currently operating below capacity due to the unfair trade
practices brought about by the benchmark values policy.

Introduced in 2019, the 50 percent reduction on import values at ports was to make the trade
through ports more attractive and enhance revenue mobilization. However, local producers say
this has not been the case after more than two years into its implementation.

Consequently, the government announced a reversal of the policy on selected 43 products that
can be produced locally, including rice, in November last year – in what was to be a huge relief
for producers.

Implementation of the reversal was to begin January 4, 2022 – but has been suspended by
President Nana Akufo-Addo to allow for wider stakeholder engagements.

Growing rice alongside aquatic animals can reduce the need for chemical fertilisers and
pesticides, as well as increase farmers’ yields, shows a study published today in eLife.

The results suggest a way to help reduce the environmental harms associated with rice
production, with potential economic benefits for rice farmers.

Modern farms often grow one type of crop and require large amounts of fertilisers and pesticides.
This has helped increase crop production, but at the cost of increased environmental degradation.
Some farmers are experimenting with growing a mixture of crops and animals to reduce the need
for agricultural chemicals by taking advantage of beneficial interactions between plants and
animals.

“One example includes farmers experimenting with growing aquatic animals in rice paddies,”
says co-first author Liang Guo, Postdoctoral Fellow at the College of Life Sciences, Zhejiang
University, Hangzhou, China. “Learning more about how these animals contribute to rice paddy
ecosystems could help with producing rice in a more sustainable way.”

Guo and colleagues conducted three experiments, each lasting for four years, to compare the
growth of rice alongside carp, mitten crabs, or softshell turtles with rice grown alone. They found
that the aquatic animals reduced weeds, increased the decomposition of organic matter, and
improved rice yields compared to the rice that was grown alone.

“We also saw that nitrogen levels in the soil remained steady in the rice paddies with aquatic
animals, reducing the need for using nitrogen-based fertilisers,” says co-first author Lufeng
Zhao, a PhD student at the College of Life Sciences, Zhejiang University.

The team next examined what the animals ate in the rice paddies. They found that 16–50% of
their diet was made up of plant and other materials they scavenged, rather than their feed. They
also found that the rice plants used around 13–35% of the nitrogen from leftover feed that was
not eaten by the animals.

Growing rice with aquatic animals resulted in yields that were between around 8.7% and 12.1%
higher than yields of rice grown alone. Additionally, farmers were able to grow between 0.5 and
2.5 tonnes of crabs, carp, or turtles per hectare alongside their rice.

“These results enhance our understanding of the roles of animals in agricultural ecosystems, and
support the view that growing crops alongside animals has a number of benefits,” concludes Xin
Chen, Professor of Ecology at the College of Life Sciences, Zhejiang University, and co-senior
author of the study alongside Dr Liangliang Hu and Professor Jianjun Tang. “In terms of rice
production, adding aquatic animals to paddies may increase farmers’ profits as they can sell both
the animals and the rice, spend less on fertiliser and pesticides, and charge more for sustainably
grown products.”

In a press briefing at the Go Hotel here, the PhilRice-Agusan highlighted the impacts of the
RCEF program on the lives of rice farmers in the region in the last three years.

PhilRice-Agusan covers the areas of Region 10 (Northern Mindanao), Region 11 (Davao

Region), and Region 13 (Caraga).

In Caraga, PhilRice-Agusan covers the provinces of Agusan del Norte, Agusan del Sur and
Surigao del Sur.

"As we approach the third year of implementation of the RCEF, we find it very timely to update
the media on the handful of initiatives which all carry one goal, and that is service to our local
farmers,” PhilRice-Agusan Branch Director Caesar Joventino Tado said.

He said RCEF is a fund created under the Rice Tariffication Law or Republic Act No. 11203 that
lifted the quantitative restrictions on the importation of rice and replaced the same with tariff.

A total of PHP10 billion fund from the tariffs imposed on rice importation is allocated yearly in
the RCEF program from 2019 to 2024.

“Of the PHP10 billion funding every year, PHP5 billion is allocated to farm mechanization,
PHP3 billion is allocated to PhilRice, PHP1 billion to the Development Bank of the Philippines
and the Land Bank of the Philippines, and PHP1 billion to the different agencies, including the
Technical Education and Skills Development Authority for training and extension services,”
Tado said.

He said RCEF aims to increase the utilization of certified inbred rice seeds for increased rice
production.

Data provided by PhilRice-Agusan showed the increase in rice yields in Caraga from 2019 to
2021 during the wet and dry seasons.

During the wet season for the past three years, an increase of 3.64 metric tons (MT) per hectare
in rice production in the region was recorded in 2019, 3.70 MT in 2020, and 3.87 in 2021.

During the dry season for the same period, increases of 3.74 MT, 3.84 MT, and 4.21 MT were
also recorded in rice production in the region.
The wet season starts from March 16 and ends September 15 while the dry season covers
September 16 to March 15 of every year, the PhilRice-Agusan said.

The agency also reported that a total of 145,629 bags of certified inbred rice seeds were
distributed in Caraga during the wet season last year benefitted 45,466 rice farmers.

A total of 69,817 hectares of farmlands in the region were also devoted to certified inbred rice
farming during the period. (PNA)

Ram Kanwar Malik (center) with his team in Bihar, India, during a field visit.

Today the Weed Science Society of America (WSSA) announced the Honorary Member award
for Ram Kanwar Malik, senior scientist at the International Maize and Wheat Improvement
Center (CIMMYT). This award is given every year to a person who has made outstanding
contributions to weed science “through their research, teaching, publishing and outreach.”

Malik’s early engagement in agricultural sustainability led to initiatives exploring herbicide

resistance evolution and management, zero tillage, and other resource-conservation technologies.
At the Cereal Systems Initiative for South Asia (CSISA) — a regional project led by CIMMYT
— Malik and his colleagues helped promote the practice of early wheat sowing to beat terminal
heat stress, resulting in increased wheat yield in India’s eastern Indo-Gangetic Plains.

“WSSA’s Honorary Member award is one of the highest recognitions bestowed by the Weed
Science Society of America,” said Krishna Reddy, Chair of the WSSA 2022 Award Committee.
“[The] Honorary Member is selected for meritorious service to weed science, among non-
members from North America or any weed scientist from other countries. Only one person per
year is awarded this membership. Dr. Malik’s significant research in weed science and his
collaborative effort to deliver solutions for farmers in developing countries like India is
inspirational.”

The award was presented virtually at the 2022 annual meeting of WSSA, held in Vancouver,
Canada.

Transforming rice–wheat systems

Phalari
s minor is a pernicious weed that affects crops like wheat and substantially reduces its yield
potential.

Malik has worked extensively in the Indo-Gangetic Plains, leading many initiatives and
innovations over the years, in collaboration with national and international partners. The WSSA
award highlights Malik’s inspiring work in tackling herbicide resistance problems, first reported
in India by his team in 1993. Malik was instrumental in developing a management solution for
herbicide-resistant Phalaris minor, a pernicious weed in wheat crops. The integrated weed
management system he helped develop raised wheat yield capacity significantly for farmers in
the Indo-Gangetic Plains.

“The WSSA Honorary Member award reiterates the importance of agronomic management for
sustained weed control strategies across cropping systems,” Malik said. “CIMMYT and partners,

including the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR), were the first
to introduce zero tillage in wheat as part of a strategy to manage weed resistance problems in
India. It is an honor that WSSA has recognized this collective work of ours,” he acknowledged.

Malik has devoted more than thirty years to transforming agricultural systems in the Indo-
Gangetic Plains, working closely with farmers and partners, and building the capacity of national
agricultural and research extension systems. he is a firm believer in farmers’ participation:
“Large-scale adoption of sustainable agricultural practices is possible when we work together to
leverage technologies which are mutually agreed by partners and meet farmers’ needs.”

Malik is a fellow of the Indian Society of Agronomy and the Indian Society of Weed Science
(ISWS), which granted him the Lifetime Achievement Award. He has also received the
Outstanding Achievement Award from the International Weed Science Society (IWSS) and the
2015 Derek Tribe Award from the Crawford Fund.

He remains passionate about and invested in changing the lives of farmers through better-bet
agronomy and by leading innovative research at CIMMYT.

Investors In Pakistan Need To Hear Asif Ali Gohar And His

Vegan Leather Idea
ByGetNews

February 21, 2022

Are you an investor in Pakistan? Are you looking for a new idea where you can invest your
money and reap significant profits? If you are, then you must not look further than Asif Ali
Gohar, who is set to change the vegan leather market.

If Pakistan wants to stay competitive in the international leather market and maintain its position,
it needs to jump on the vegan bandwagon. Here is everything you need to know about Asif Ali
Gohar and his idea.

Daily Global, Regional & Local Rice E-Newsletter
Who Is Asif Ali Gohar?

TARI lectures farmers as worms destroy 5000 acres of rice, maize

SWARMS of armyworms have destroyed about 5000 acres of rice and 228 acres of maize in
Kilombero district, Morogoro Region, causing massive losses to farmers.

Dr Kigonza Bilalo, director of TARI-Katrin at Ifakara in the region said yesterday that a team of
researchers from the Tanzania Agricultural Research Institute visited the affected areas to
explain to farmers how to control the swarms of destructive pests.

Speaking to affected farmers, he said there are specific insect types for breeding to release in
farms as they feed on armyworms, urging farmers to always seek experts' advice before using
such insects

Farms of around 4,976 acres of rice in Kilombero were more or less destroyed by the fall
armyworms, he affirmed, stating that experts have been deployed to assist farmers on preventive
measures to take in order to hinder the pests from invading more farms

“Unfortunately, some of the farmers have been rushing to the shops to purchase pesticides
without seeking advice from extension officers, and this hasn’t helped them as the worms have
continued to increase,” he affirmed.

Farmers need to take precautions whenever they notice grasshopper related pests starting to
appear on their farms, as preventive measures help to avoid causing vast harm to crops, he
elaborated.

Hussein Mohamed, a farmer at Kilama village, said this was the first time he experiences an
invasion of pests since he entered into rice farming in the 1970s.

Kilombero district commissioner Hanji Godigodi said the fall armyworms were seen in 12 wards
within Ifakara town council zone but seven wards were severely affected, listing them as
Lumemo, Msolwa Station, Kiberege, Mang'ula, Mbasa, Kibaoni and Ifakara.

Skipping the insect control method, he said the government has already delivered 90 litres of
pesticides to fight the invading armyworms, with the consignment distributed to farmers who had
not been able to purchasing the input in shops.

The district authorities were also liaising with the Ministry of Agriculture to obtain permits for
another 1500 litres of pesticides for distribution in other areas, he stated.

Hoff Mwakaje, an Ifakara extension officer, said authorities were conducting visits to affected
farmers to issue instructions on precautions in handling the destructive pests.

dominated by chemical fertilizers. The role of chemical fertilizers in Rice yields only 59% to
69%, but its use with organic nutrient sources can help produce Rice grains and store carbon in
the soil. Now Let’s get into the details of the fertilizer requirement of the Rice crop/Paddy crop.

With the use of biofertilizer, Rice yield is 50% lower than N, and phosphorus (P) is 32% higher
than that of chemical fertilizers. Nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium make the Rice plant strong
and healthy with many tails resulting in higher yields. Nutrient requirement depends on;

 Target yield and soil nutrient supply

 Fertilizer and recovery type
 Time (which depends on variety maturity)

What nutrients are required for Rice to grow properly?

First of all, before you use any method of fertilizing, you have to keep in mind the soil condition
of your field through semi-annual or annual soil testing. No two fields are alike, nor can anyone

advise you on fertilization methods regardless of your soil test data, tissue analysis, and crop
history of your field. ‫ ۔‬However, we will list the most common Rice fertilizer application
schemes, which are used by a large number of farmers.

A common Rice fertilizer application scheme used by a large number of Rice farmers involves 2
major applications for fertilizer: the first application occurs approximately simultaneously with
planting or transplanting (or approximately 20). Days later) and the second is about 45 to 60 days
after the first request. Many farmers apply 0.5-tons of N-P-K 30-10-10 per hectare on the day of
sowing/planting (or 20 days later).

Approximately 45-60 days after the first application, they apply 0.2-0.3 tons of N-P-K 40-0-0 or
33-0-0 per hectare. Your Rice plants may or may not produce more after the use of fertilizers. In
each field, you will get a special grain production no matter what fertilizer you add. The nutrients

for this production are supplied from the soil. Fertilizer is essential if you want to increase
yields.

Best fertilizer for Rice crop

NPK fertilizer

Nitrogen

Nitrogen is the most restrictive nutrient for NPK Rice production. Nitrogen is essential for plant
height, leaf size, panicle number, and high yield per hectare. Rice requires a lot of nitrogen to
make pancakes. The critical period in which many farmers apply N occurs two weeks after
transplanting or 21 days after sowing. In addition, many farmers forward N applications before
sowing and filling seeds in the field.

Nitrogen can be used in dry soil which we will irrigate immediately. Alternatively, integrate it
and flood the field after 3 to 5 days. An initial application may also be in the form of ammonium.
We can apply it on dry soil, just before flooding. We should keep in mind that once we apply the
initial N, the field will flood within 5 days. Flooding usually incorporates N into the soil and
protects it from damage. However, keep in mind that each field is different and has different
needs.

Nitrogen, the most important nutrient for Rice, is limiting global Rice production capacity.
Nitrogen stimulates plant growth by giving the leaves a healthy green color. Most Indica
varieties appear to have a relatively low nitrogen level in the region of 25 kg N / ha.

Phosphorus (P)

Phosphorus is very important in the early stages of the development of Rice plants. It helps in the
strong root development. Soil pH plays an important role in the P availability. Many Rice
growers claim that the ideal availability of phosphorus for Rice is when the soil pH is less than
6.5.

Potassium (K)

Potassium (K) is also essential for good Rice production. Potassium (K) aids in plant disease
resistance, root growth, and thickness, leaf sustainability, leaf onset, and growth. Potassium
deficiency has a major impact on crop growth.

the results of the soil test. If a soil test shows a deficiency, apply P and K doses. If you want to
use DAP, use Urea @ 100kg / acre, DAP @ 27kg / acre and MOP @ 20kg / acre. Apply 1/3 dose
of nitrogen and a full dose of P and K before the last puddling.

Apply zinc sulfate heptahydrate @ 25 kg or zinc sulfate monohydrate @ 16 kg per acre to

control zinc deficiency. Due to the lack of water, the young leaves turn yellow or yellowish-

white about three weeks after transplanting. Also, irrigate immediately spray ferrous sulfate 1
kg / 100 liters of water per acre two to three times at weekly intervals.

Most suitable fertilizer for Rice

The most suitable fertilizer for Rice is one that meets the nutritional requirements of plants,
especially nitrogen and sulfur. The most suitable fertilizer for Rice is ammonium sulfate.
Farmers use ammonium sulfate primarily where they need extra N (nitrogen-based) and S
(sulfur-based) to meet the nutritional needs of growing plants. After all, ammonium sulfate
contains only 21% N.

Other sources of fertilizer are more concentrated and efficient, making it a better choice for N-
deficient fields. Ammonium sulfate supports or drives many essential plant functions, including
protein synthesis. Because N-fraction ammonium is present in the ammonium form of sulfate,
Ricegrowers often apply it to flooded lands, as nitrate-based fertilizers are a poor choice due to
denitrification losses.

When to apply fertilizer

Always apply fertilizer in the land 3-4 cm below the seed so that the seed and the fertilizer do not
mix, as this harms seed germination and crop yield. When applying fertilizer, mix half the
amount of nitrogen before sowing and divide the remaining amount of nitrogen into two parts
then mix in soil 20-25 and 50-55 days after sowing. Though, use phosphorus and potash.

Zinc is an important micronutrient in Rice fields. It causes cucumber disease. Apply 20-25 kg
zinc sulfate before sowing to supplement zinc deficiency in dwarf Rice varieties. For basmati
and hybrid varieties, apply 20-25 kg and 25-30 kg zinc sulfate before sowing.

Other nutrients

Calcium – Calcium combines with pectin to form calcium pectate, an essential component of the
cell wall. It also promotes the activity of soil bacteria related to the determination of free

nitrogen or the formation of nitrates from organic forms of nitrogen. In addition, it is essential for
the development of a good root system.

Magnesium – This is usually required by the plants in relatively small quantities. Therefore, its
deficiency in soil is felt later than in potassium.

Sulfur – These include chlorophyll production, protein synthesis, and plant function and
structure. Sulfur forms an important component of straw and plant stalks.

Iron – Iron is essential for the synthesis of iron chlorophyll.

Zinc – Zinc is essential for the conversion of carbohydrates. Zinc acts as a metal activator of
enzymes in plants. Zinc deficiency in lowland Rice occurs near neutral to alkaline soils,
especially in calcareous soils.

Boron – Boron facilitates the translocation of sugar by creating a sugar borate complex. Also
involved in fertilization, hormone metabolism, etc.

Copper – It is an important component of plastocyanin (copper-containing protein). It is also a

component of many oxidizing enzymes. Important for reproductive development. The root helps
in metabolism and helps protein utilization.

Manganese – Manganese is a nitrate reductase and activator of many respiratory enzymes. It is

essential for the evolution of oxygen (photolysis) during photosynthesis. Works with enzyme
systems involved in the breakdown of carbohydrates and nitrogen metabolism. Soil is a source of
manganese.

Silicon – Silicon is an important element in improving plant health and disease resistance. It has
the potential to significantly reduce the susceptibility of certain plants to both biological and
abiotic diseases. It is beneficial for Rice cultivation.

Organic fertilizers

Organic fertilizers commonly used in Rice orchards, such as cow dung, green manure, and Rice
husk, contain substances that increase the amount of carbon in the soil at different stages. The
global carbon content of soil today is so high that it contains three times as much carbon as the
atmosphere. Thus, even a small change in soil management techniques (such as adding organic
matter) has the potential to significantly reduce human GHG emissions from Rice production.

The results of the scientists’ study examined the addition of organic and inorganic fertilizers
(usually a combination of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium, commonly called NPK) to
increase their global warming potential and methane emissions, soil carbon storage, and crop
productivity. Rice seedlings are sown in five different plots. In the first plot, the traditional NPK
has applied only a regular dose of fertilizer, and it acted as a control against which others were
measured.

The other four plots used a variety of organic materials like cow dung, green manure from the
herbaceous plant called Sesbania aculeata, compost from the aquatic fern called Azolla
caroliniana, and Rice husk. These organic compounds were added in addition to inorganic NP
fertilizers.  The study observed that NPK and green manure plots increased methane emissions
compared to control plots with only NPK.

Researchers also found that adding cow dung or green manure increased methane emissions by
40-60%. However, crop yields showed an upside pattern; This has increased significantly with

the addition of organic fertilizers. Research has shown that Azolla compost plots had the highest
increase in production (27%), followed by cow dung (23%), Rice husk (17%), and green manure
(11%).

Application of organic fertilizer

 Apply 12.5-ton FYM or compost or green leaf manure @ 6.25 ton/ha.

 If green manure is sown at the rate of 50 kg seed per hectare, apply green manure to a
depth of 15 cm by trampler or tractor.
 Green manure can be replaced by press-mud/ composted coir-pith.

Green manure/core cropping

A common green manure used in Rice production is Azolla or duckweed fern. Nitrogen fixed in
Azolla becomes available for Rice when Azolla is decomposed.

Farmyard manure

Farmyard manure can be a mixture of animal dung, urine, straw, and litter which is used as
bedding stock. The abundance of this manure depends on some factors like (a) the nutritional
value of the food given to the animal; feeds rich in protein and minerals produce manure (b)
quantity of straw used; an excessive amount of straw ensures slow digestion of manure.
Farmyard fertilizer increases soil organic carbon levels.

Compost

Compost is made from decomposed organic matter. Organic matter can be anything from crop
residues to animal droppings or dung. Rice residue is used in the production of organic Rice.
This compost consists of Rice straw and husk (through milling products), legume crop residues,
and animal waste. These components are stacked in layers to form a heap. The heap is kept moist
and either left to stand or stirred once every two weeks to facilitate decomposition.

Biofertilizers

Biofertilizers are substances that are either living microorganisms or derived from them that are
applied to plant surfaces or soil. They inhabit the rhizosphere and help increase the availability of
basic nutrients for the host plant, thus promoting growth. Bio-fertilizers add nutrients to the soil
through nitrogen fixation and increase the amount of phosphorus by 25%. In Rice fields, Azolla
is widely used as a bio-fertilizer with its ability to fix nitrogen. Flooded Rice fields are
vaccinated with Azolla, which helps suppress weeds.

that are developing around climate smart agriculture,” said Ben Noble, Riceland’s executive vice
president and chief operating officer. “Our farmers are already implementing a number of
sustainable efforts, and this partnership allows Riceland farmers to quantify and potentially
monetize their agronomic practices.”

program will also help the cooperative collect and aggregate farm level data throughout the
membership to further Riceland’s Ingrain Good Sustainability Initiative with its customers and
consumers.

Riceland Member and Arva CEO Jay McEntire said Arva’s partnership with Riceland is key to
meeting consumer demand in the future. “Documenting sustainable practices for CPG and ESG
(Environmental, Social and Governance) goals and monetizing environmental offsets for
Riceland Members is at the core of Arva’s business,” said McEntire. “We are thrilled to work
with Riceland and their CPG partners to meet ever growing customer demands.”

Arva’s Director of Sales Matt Rohlik shares a similar passion for the partnership. “The value of
this partnership not only puts data to work enriching the rice, but also provides key agronomic
insights for the members to leverage for potentially improving yield and milling quality,” Rohlik
said.

“We’re incredibly excited to begin our partnership with Arva and finally close the gap between
farm level data and food production,” said Adam Shea, Riceland’s director of sustainability. “We
believe this program will position Riceland and its members to take advantage of developing
environmental asset markets in the future.
