Modified Cornhole

Instructions/Description:
This activity is an easy fun activity at home that will help your child with underhand
throwing skills. On this sheet will be a breakdown of the skills and different equipment,
checklists, modifications for each skill. Please feel free to keep this paper for present
and future use, but please give all data collected from the checklist to the teacher.
Thank you and I hope you and your child enjoy the activities!

Equipment:
 Bundled socks (usually a pair rolled/formed into a ball) 5-10 bundles or 5-10 pairs
 Multiple Laundry baskets or basket/bucket of similar size
 Chair, table, counter (a higher elevated surface to place laundry basket on top of)

Skills Breakdown:

Underhand toss -
Place the laundry basket 7 feet away from your child on the ground (make sure that the
basket is lower than the child's waist) and have bundles at the feet of the child. Have
your child face the laundry basket and perform underhand throws (follow steps):
1. The throwing arm of the child (right arm if right-handed, left arm if left-handed)
should first swing backwards while still gripping the object about to be thrown.
2. Step forward with opposite foot of throwing hand/arm (left foot will step forward if
right-handed or right foot will step forward if left-handed)
3. The throwing arm will then swing forward and release the socks towards the
target (the laundry basket)
4. Throwing arm will follow through and extend forward even after the socks are
released from hand.
Do this skill a total of 10 throws underhand while making sure the child is using the
correct sequence of steps to perform the skill. Make this more fun by seeing how many
in total the child can make. You can adjust the distance of how far the child will be
throwing based on how successful the child is when making the socks in the basket. Be
sure to record on the checklist according to the performance of the child.

Modifications:
 If your child struggles with tossing the sock, have the child pick up the pairs of
socks and put them in the basket at waist height one at a time. For the next
progression have the child walk up to the laundry basket and stop one to two feet
away and perform the steps. Use prompts as well when doing modifications to
help your child learn the different steps of skill.

Prompts:
 Verbal
o “Swing your arm back”
o “Take a big step”
o “Swing your arm forward”
 Model
o Demonstrate yourself performing the skill to the child using verbal cues
stated above during each step of the skill to help enforce each step. Have
the child try to imitate your movements when performing each step of the
skill.
 Hand over Hand
o Stand behind and place your hand on the child's hands and legs and
guide them through each step and movement when performing skill. Move
their arms in the underhand throwing motion, but make sure to follow
steps to have them take a step forward with the opposite foot of the
throwing hand before tossing.

Overhand throw -
Place the laundry basket 7 feet away from your child on an elevated surface (table,
counter, or chair will work, make sure that the basket is above the child's waist) and
have bundles at the feet of the child. Have your child face the laundry basket and
perform underhand throws (follow steps):
1. Opposite shoulder of throwing arm is facing target (If right-handed, left shoulder
will be point at target, if left-handed right shoulder is facing target)
2. Dominate throwing arm will wind back with sock held high close about head level
(socks should be close to the ear, like how you would hold a phone)
3. Step forward with opposite foot of throwing hand/arm (left foot will step forward if
right-handed or right foot will step forward if left-handed)
4. Hip and torso with turn as arm throws sock (hips will turn first, then torso, then
arm will follow)
5. Throwing arm will follow through and extend forward even after the socks are
released from hand.
Do this skill a total of 10 throws overhand while making sure the child is using the
correct sequence of steps to perform the skill. Make this more fun by seeing how many
in total the child can make. You can adjust the distance of how far the child will be
throwing based on how successful the child is when making the socks in the basket. Be
sure to record on the checklist according to the performance of the child.

Modifications:
 If your child struggles with throwing the sock, have the child pick up the pairs of
socks and put them in the basket one at a time and drop the sock in the basket at
chest height. For the next progression have the child walk up to the laundry
basket and stop one to two feet away and perform the steps. Use prompts as
well when doing modifications to help your child learn the different steps of skill.
Prompts:
 Verbal
o “Point your ‘non-dominant’ shoulder” (non-dominant shoulder will be left if
right-handed or right shoulder if left-handed)
o “Answer the phone”
o “Take a big step”
o “Turn your body”
 Model
o Demonstrate yourself performing the skill to the child using verbal cues
stated above during each step of the skill to help enforce each step. Have
the child try to imitate your movements when performing each step of the
skill.
 Hand over Hand
o Stand behind and place your hand on the child's hands and legs and
guide them through each step and movement when performing skill. Move
their arms in the overhand throwing motion, but make sure to follow steps
in order to have them take a step forward with the opposite foot of the
throwing hand before actually throwing.

Activity: Laundry Cornhole

This activity can be played with one person or any number of people can be added. This
game can be played inside or outside the house. A laundry basket is set up fifteen feet
away from the player and the player will have five pairs of socks to throw. In the case of
a game with multiple players two laundry baskets and five pairs of socks at each basket
will be set up opposite each other fifteen feet apart. For any number of players greater
than two players will be on one of two teams and taking turns together. The object of the
game is to toss or throw your socks into the opposing basket fifteen feet away from the
player. Any socks that hit any part of the basket without making it into the basket will be
worth one point and any socks that are made into the basket are worth three points.
When throwing you must be behind the laundry basket or at least fifteen feet away from
the opposing laundry basket. There are three rounds when playing: first round socks
must be tossed underhand. Second round socks will be thrown overhand. Third round
you can choose to throw overhand or toss underhand. The goal is to get the highest
score possible from all three rounds.

Modifications:
 Possible modifications include making the size of the baskets bigger and/or
changing the distance from fifteen feet to a shorter distance. You could create an
area in a circle around the laundry baskets using clothes (ties would work well) to
increase the size to score one point.
