FILM ANALYSIS PAPER

When a married pair, Charlie and Nicole, performs a voiceover to introduce the film, they list

all the traits they like in one other. This turns out to be a divorce mediation activity designed to

remind them of how they first fell in love. Nicole runs off as soon as the meditator asks Nicole

and the others to read the sentences they've composed. Instead of going to court, Henry's parents

have elected to attempt mediation to assist their child. In New York City, Charlie works as a

writer and Nicole as a performer. Nicole must leave Charlie's show shortly before it opens on

Broadway to shoot a TV pilot in Los Angeles. This film delves into the significance of marriage

and divorce. Divorce is a terrible thing in and of itself, but Charlie and Nicole's quiet divorce is

going to unravel when their eight-year-old son, Henry, finds out. If well-paid and well-known

lawyers are in command, there's a significant possibility things will become unpleasant. What

creates such deep and agonizing scars in love? Is love still love at the end of the day? In this

analysis paper, a thorough film study will reveal the consequences.

Nicole is introduced to Nora Fanshaw, a strong divorce lawyer recommended to her by a

colleague in Los Angeles. Nicole started acting in Charlie's short films after meeting him on a

trip to New York, which helped draw attention to the theatre they co-founded. Even when she

was offered the chance to direct a play in Los Angeles, Charlie had never given it a second

thought, even though she had relatives and ancestors there. Nicole thought their relationship was

over after she accused Charlie of having sex with his stage manager. While in town, Charlie

takes a break from working on his play to visit Henry. He informs Nicole that he has received a

MacArthur Genius Grant to recognize his work as a filmmaker. Cassie is assigned the awkward

task of giving the divorce papers to Charlie by her sister Nicole. Nicole explains to Charlie that

this way is more convenient since it eliminates the need for a lawyer.

When Charlie meets with divorce attorney Jay, he runs because he is frightened. When he

returns to New York, he tells Mary Ann that he can't take it long after the night they had the

night before and that he needs to return to work. Nora reaches out to Charlie to inquire about his

non-response to the divorce papers. Nora threatens to transfer custody of his children over to

Nicole if he does not answer within thirty days. As it turns out, Nicole has previously vetted

most of the attorneys in Los Angeles, so Charlie cannot employ them. Bert Spitz, an ex-star

lawyer, now working in a small firm, is someone she recommends. Because Henry was born and

raised in California, the courts recognize Charlie and Bert as a California couple. According to

Charlie, Henry should return to New York, and the family's stay in California is just temporary.

Bert is a kind guy who is the first to offer Charlie respect throughout the process. He tells Charlie

that getting an apartment in Los Angeles would help him stand out in court. Despite his

exhaustion, Charlie brings Henry trick-or-treating the following day. On the other hand, Charlie

disputes Henry's claim that California is his favourite state. Nicole's performance was a success,

and she plans to stay in town once it finishes.

Charlie's idea for Henry to travel to New York to meet with attorneys is met with vehement

resistance from Nora. Nora claims that Charlie turned down Nicole's request to visit California

and is continuously besieged with details about their relationship. Bert tells Charlie in private

that he has to leave New York, but Charlie is adamant and sobs at the prospect of leaving his

family behind. Nora and Nicole meet in court to finalize the papers after working out the

paperwork with Bert, but Charlie shows up with Jay instead. When Nora hears this news, it's

evident that they're preparing for war. Jay and Nora take advantage of personal facts about

Charlie and Nicole in court. Jay and Nora are at odds when Nora brings up Charlie's affair, and

Jay tries to steal Nicole's television money. The court decides that an impartial assessor will visit

both parents to observe their behaviour.

Nicolle visits Charlie because she is concerned about the lawyers' behaviour and wants to

speak with him. Despite Charlie's vow, a terrible struggle quickly erupts. When she tells him

how selfish he is, Charlie responds by saying he wishes she would die before weeping and

apologizing for his selfishness and inability to see beyond himself. Although males are given

some leeway, Nora reminds Nicole that moms are held to a more excellent standard of

responsibility. Henry suggests that Charles do his pocket knife act during supper. Charlie

pretended to be wounded with the knife and bled profusely to make Nicole laugh, telling the

examiner that he drew the blade and injured himself to make her laugh. He collapses exhausted

on the kitchen floor after that.

Regardless of how much Charlie and Nicole spent on legal fees during their divorce, Nora

and Jay have no intention of pursuing the other's assets. Nora explains to Nicole why joint

custody is not officially shared while Charlie is in town since she achieved a 55-45 percent split

to prevent Charlie from claiming victory. Charlie and his band played "Being Alive" at a jazz

and singing venue in New York City. Nicole is even more keen to start a new relationship after

receiving an Emmy nomination for directing the next Halloween flick.

When Charlie visits Nicole, he informs her that he has accepted a position as a director in

Los Angeles and plans to go there permanently. When he proposed to her, she was ecstatic.

When the divorce procedures begin, Henry seeks Charlie's help deciphering Nicole's letter to the

mediator. As Charlie reads the letter aloud, his eyes fill up with tears, Nicole keeps an eye on

him. Even though it is Nicole's night for custody, Nicole asks Charlie to take Henry with him

after trick-or-treating. Nicole pleaded for Charlie to remain, but he refused, and Nicole returned

to mend the shoe before saying her goodbyes.

Although Baumbach's divorcees seem petty and self-pitying, the audience finds them

amusing and sympathetic. He also defies some of his conventions, opting for longer takes over

his usual rapid pace and writing in a more solemn tone than previously. Finally, the result is a

film on divorce's physical and psychological impacts. It's one of the best films of the year and an

excellent character study.

Despite the title, in the film's plot, Nicole and Charlie discuss their favourite aspects of each

other. Baumbach produces a stunning montage that captures their lives together and helps us fall

in love with the characters as they recite their lists. Baumbach, renowned for his caustic and

cutting comedy, is absent from these episodes. He understands that the mediator's goal is to keep

them on good terms throughout the divorce process. We can anticipate Baumbach to continue to

amaze us with his capacity to be both scathing and compassionate in his future work.

Baumbach's purpose is to perplex his viewers by portraying beautiful and puzzling

characters. They have, however, grown apart and are no longer able to work together. Following

her breakup with Charlie in the theatre, Nicole contemplates going to Los Angeles to pursue a

career in television. Nicole's desire to break away from Charlie has developed due to the

director/interest producer's presence in his firm.

As shown in the film "Marriage Story," divorce is like death without a body. Humans go

through a wide range of emotions during their lives, including despair, rage, and denial. When a
FILM ANALYSIS PAPER 6

couple still loves each other, divorces, Baumbach's touching the sad book reveals the insidious

consequences of divorce. You can't possibly be the type of person who uses your spouse's secrets

against them to achieve a divorce. Would you purposefully pit a child against their parent to get

an advantage? Others had already done it. His characters are changed into versions of themselves

that they never planned to be via a divorce with grace and compassion. Some of the points of the

film show interpersonal communication among characters, creating a more exciting line in the

story.

 Charlie and Nicole first agree to a low-key divorce, but as the procedures develop, it

becomes evident that their "play nice" method will not work.

 Insider learnt from a divorce therapist that the film appropriately shows the hardships of a

broken relationship.

 She does, however, feel that the film helped her better understand the challenges of co-

parenting and how to cope with them.

The poetry for a mediator written by Baumbach's characters emphasizes the positive aspects

of their relationships. Scarlett Johansson's character Nicole is a social butterfly who enjoys

spending time with her little son Henry, is concerned about her ageing mother, and never closes a

cabinet door. Charlie is a passionate theatre director who is informed and forward-thinking. He

eats like a thief and is a dangerous adversary. These seemingly little nuances in "Marriage Story"

demonstrate the author's meticulous attention to detail. Baumbach, in his vision, isn't interested

in going into every facet of divorce; instead, he wants to concentrate on the fundamentals.

Despite a few surprise laughs, this is primarily a domestic film. There have been a few

breakups in the past, but it seems Nicole and their child will be the last straw when they go to
FILM ANALYSIS PAPER 7

Los Angeles to film a pilot. Whenever Charlie visits, she does what her tenacious lawyer, Nora,

advises and hands over the paperwork. Nicole's desire to move their child to Los Angeles has

caused a rift between Charlie and Nicole. His plans for a play in New York are continually

conflicting with the chaos in Los Angeles, which he is also trying to keep track of. People's

identities start to vanish, and they acquire new ones suddenly.

A common reason for divorce realizes that marriage only benefits one person. As Charlie and

Nicole's divorce procedures develop, it becomes clear that Charlie was happier in his marriage

than Nicole since it was on his terms. Nicole had expressed a wish to relocate to Los Angeles to

raise their son Henry throughout their marriage. Still, Charlie stated it was impossible since they

were a "New York family", and his whole career as a play director was headquartered in New

York.

In the film "Marriage Story," divorce is shown as "death without a body." This doesn't feel

right in any way. Sadness, rage, and denial are just a few of the many feelings that people go

through throughout life. A personal and emotional story by Baum Bach shows how two people

who still care for each other may achieve things they never thought they'd be able to do after a

divorce. You may not possibly be the kind of person who would try to get a divorce by lying. Do

you think it's appropriate to pit a child against a parent to get the upper hand? I don't know

anybody who does it. With incredible refinement and concern for his characters, Baumbach

shows the divorce as a great balancer, turning us into versions of “ourselves” we never planned

to become.

Divorce itself is a dreadful thing, and there's a good chance that items become nasty if well-

paid and well-known attorneys are in charge. What causes love to leave such deep and agonizing
FILM ANALYSIS PAPER 8

wounds is all we misunderstand one another. Love remains alive because it has to for our

ultimate survival. The film's point of view pushes them to the breaking point: how Baumbach

gives and hides information, how he maintains track of characters whose circumstances are

continuously changing even as they seem to be static, etc. It is an odd mismatch, considering the

story's path so far. A weird fascination permeates their appearances and dialects, flavoured with

cubism and humour. Before this moment in their lives, they could not have known one other.
