ACTIVITY: CASE STUDY #3

 Jonathan is a junior in high school and has many decisions to make

in his life. He wants to go to college very much but is unable to pay
for it. He has missed the deadline for qualifying for financial aid.
He feels he will excel at any college he attends, but he needs an
academic scholarship. Although his grade point average is good, it
is not high enough to earn him the desired scholarship. Knowing
this, he thinks about boosting his scores by cheating on his mid-term
exams.

STAGE 1: Jonathan in stage one might reply, “If I cheat on the mid-
term exams, it would just make things worst. I will not do it to avoid
being punished by the school. Beyond the impact of grades,
disciplinary actions are included in the school record. This could
seriously hurt my chances of getting into college.”

STAGE 2: In the stage 2, Jonathan might expressed, “Cheating will

help me to achieve my score goal. I will do it because it will make my
grade point average more higher which will benefits me to get my
desired scholarship for college.”

STAGE 3: At this stage the reply could be, “I will not cheat on the mid-
term exams because if everyone will do it, we would no longer be
trusted to take any exams from our school and more worse is, we will
never be able to set our feet in the graduation stage to get our
diplomas.”

STAGE 4: In this stage, perhaps Jonathan might reply, “I will not do

any kind of cheating because that is against from the school rules and
as a student, I should respect the school authorities” or maybe “If my
parents found out what I have done, they will be ashamed of me. Not
just my parents, but my whole family and friends.”
STAGE 5: In the stage 5, Jonathan might say, “I will do it because that
is the only way I can go to college. Yes, it may be against the rules but
school will not help me go into college in anyway. My scholarship is
more important than the school rules.” or perhaps to say, “ I will not do
it even though it will make me go into college, we need to respect all of
those teachers who work hard sharing their knowledge in able for us to
be successful in academics, career and life otherwise we might abuse it.

STAGE 6: At this stage the reply could be, “No, I will not cheat on the
mid-term exams because I personally believe that students has no rights
to disrespect teacher’s hard work and this will just lead more to
compromises my own moral and ethical code so I cannot be part to
such action.” or maybe “Yes, the decision to cheat on the mid-term
exams is good since my reason is valid and the future of me is on the
edge.”
