I. PURPOSE

The purpose of this Rating Standard is to prescribe testing and rating procedures for the
operation of the EUROVENT CERTIFICATION Programme for Rooftops, as defined in
EUROVENT Operational Manual OM-13- 2009.

II. SCOPE

This Certification Programme applies to air-cooled and water-cooled rooftops as defined in

section III.1, rated below 100 kW. The following products are excluded from the
Certification Programme:
• Models with capacity higher than 100 kW.

Models of rooftops using gas burners for heating shall only be certified for cooling.

Minimum external static pressure requirements are defined in Table 1.

Table 1: Pressure Requirements for Rooftops

Minimum external Minimum external

Standard capacity Standard capacity
static pressure [Pa] static pressure [Pa]
ratings [kW] ratings [kW]
ESPmin ESPmin
0<Q<8 25 45 ≤ Q < 82 100
8 ≤ Q < 12 37 82 ≤ Q < 117 125
12 ≤ Q < 20 50 117 ≤ Q < 147 150
20 ≤ Q < 30 62 Q > 147 175
30 ≤ Q < 45 75

“Certify-all” requirement: Whenever a Company participates to a certification

programme, all production models, within the scope of that programme, shall be certified in
accordance with the appropriate standard.

III. DEFINITIONS

III.1 Rooftop

A rooftop unit is defined by the following features:

• Comfort air conditioner
• Packaged unit assembled in factory
• Common single frame
• Direct expansion system
• Air-cooled condenser with axial fan (for air-cooled rooftops) or water cooled
condeser (for water cooled rooftops)
• Designed to operate permanently outdoors with the possibility to be installed on
the roof curb for vertical flow
• Cold or warm supply air provided through a duct

III.2 Basic models

Basic models are defined having the same following common characteristics:
• Same compressor
• Same exchangers
• Same refrigerant

III.3 Measured and rated data

a. Net Cooling Capacity

Measured Cooling Capacity (in kW) at nominal conditions, rated at 0 Pa, in

conformity with EN 14511, according to the following equation:
qΔP
Net Cooling Capacity = Measured Cooling Capacity + [W]
η
Where: η = 0.3 by convention
ΔP = Measured Static Pressure [Pa]
q = Nominal Airflow Rate [m3/s].

b. Net Heating Capacity

Measured Heating Capacity at nominal conditions rated at 0 Pa, according to

the following equation:
qΔP
Net Heating Capacity = Measured Heating Capacity − [W]
η

c. Indoor Fan Power Input

Measured Indoor Fan Power Input at nominal airflow, rated at 0 Pa, according
to the following equation:
qΔP
Indoor Fan Power Input = Measured Fan Power Input − [W]
η

d. Total Power Input

Measured Total Power Input at nominal conditions, rated at 0 Pa, according to
the following equation:
qΔP
Total Power Input = Measured Total Power Input − [W]
η

e. Net EER, Net COP, Gross EER

Net Cooling Capacity Net Heating Capacity

Net EER = [-] ; Net COP = [-]
Total Power Input (Cooling) Total Power Input (Heating)

Net Cooling Capacity + Indoor Fan Power Input

Gross EER = [-]
Total Power Input - Indoor Fan Power Input

IV. TESTING REQUIREMENTS

Standard ratings shall be established at the standard rating conditions specified in

section V. All standard ratings shall be verified by tests conducted in accordance with the
following standards:

IV.1 Performance testing

EN 14511: “Air conditioners, liquid chilling packages and heat pumps with electrically
driven compressors for space heating and cooling”.

IV.2 Acoustical testing

EUROVENT 8/1: “Acoustical measurement on machines and equipment in the free

fields or large rooms on a hard reflecting plane”.

V. RATING REQUIREMENTS

Performance ratings claimed by manufacturers shall be verified by tests performed in one

of Eurovent Independent Laboratories. The rooftop units shall be tested and rated at
specific conditions, the closest possible to their application. The following specifications will
be used during the tests:
• Test unit shall be installed with vertical or horizontal airflow in accordance with the
manufacturer’s specifications
• Indoor airflow should be in relation with cooling capacity, therefore expressed in
m3/h/kW. It shall be between 170 and 210 m3/h/kW
• No fresh air shall be used for rating, neither in cooling, nor in heating.
• The operating conditions shall be used following Table 2.
• Allowable deviations from set values are given in Table 3.

Table 2: Operating conditions for standard rating

INDOOR UNIT OUTDOOR UNIT

Air entering °C Air entering °C Water °C
Dry bulb Wet bulb Dry bulb Wet bulb In Out
COOLING 27 19 35 24 30 35
HEATING 20 15 max. 7 6 20*

* For units designated for cooling mode, the water flow rate obtained during the test at standard
rating conditions in cooling is used.

Table 3: Allowable deviations from set values

Measured quantity Arithmetic mean value Individual measured value

AIR
Inlet temperature (dry / wet bulb) ± 0.3 K ±1K
Volume flow ±5% ± 10 %
Static pressure difference ------- ± 10 %
LIQUID
Inlet temperature ± 0.2 K ± 0.5 K
Outlet Temperature ± 0.3 K ± 0.6 K
Volume flow ±2% ±5%
Static pressure difference ------- ± 10 %
VOLTAGE ±4% ±4%

• Testing shall be carried without mixing damper.

• The rated airflow rate given by the manufacturer shall be set and the resulting
external static pressure (ESP) measured. This ESP shall be greater than the
minimum value given in Table 1. For equipment tested without an air filter installed,
the minimum external static pressure shall be increased by 10 Pa.

VI. CERTIFIED CHARACTERISTICS

The following performance characteristics shall be certified and verified by tests:

a) Net Cooling Capacity
b) Net Heating Capacity
c) Total Unit Power Input
d) Net EER
e) Gross EER
f) Net COP
g) Condenser water pressure drop (only for water cooled rooftops)
h) A-weighted Sound Power Level outside
i) A-weighted Sound Power Level in supply duct.

VII.TOLERANCES

When tested in Laboratory, the characteristics obtained shall not differ from the values
claimed by the participants by more than:
• Net Capacity (Cooling or Heating): -5%
• Net EER or Net COP: -8%
• Condenser water pressure drop + 15 %
• A-weighted Sound Power Level: + 3 dBA.
