This document outlines a problem-based learning assignment involving the turning of steel on a lathe. Students must calculate cutting force, torque, power, and minimum energy during a process to reduce the diameter of a steel alloy from 1 inch to 0.8 inch. The write-up requires sections on abstract, introduction reviewing machining methods and alloy selection, methodology, results and discussions with calculations in an appendix, and conclusions.

Deadline – Monday December 19, 2022 A 12 inch long, 1 inch diameter of Steel alloy is being reduced in diameter to 0.8 inch by turning on a lathe. Take suitable spindle speed, feed, and depth of cut values. Calculate cutting force, torque, power, and minimum energy during the operation. Also, compare effect of change of one factor on other. For example, effect of depth on cutting force and cutting power.
Write-up of your assignment must include following sections:
Abstract (max. 300 words) Introduction (Not more than three paragraphs having max. 750 words). Your introduction must include review of different machining methods and why lathe is preferable for turning operation. You may select any steel alloy, but introduction must include review of steel alloys and basis for selection of your selected alloy. Tools review and basis of selection of selected tool. All the equations, figures and tables should be mentioned in the appendix. Methodology – not more than 500 words. All the equations, figures and tables should be mentioned in the appendix and referred in the methodology. Results and Discussions – not more than 500 words. All the equations, figures and tables should be place in an appendix and referred in the results and discussions section. Conclusions – max 300 words (conclusion must have a brief adopted methodology and key results in the bullet form).
Appendix 1: List of equations
Appendix 2: List of figures Appendix 3: List of tables
