BACKGROUND INFORMATION FOR LEARNERS:

A. Concepts and competencies in performing organic agriculture operations


Organic farming originated in the early 20th-century due to rapid changes in farming practices and
innovations. It is a farming method that aims to produce crops and livestock without using pesticides,
synthetic fertilizers, genetically modified seeds, organisms, antibiotics, and growth hormones. Organic
production is a holistic system designed to create a harmonious relationship between people and
environment, farming, and agroecosystem, including the protection of soil organisms, plants, and
livestock. The principal goal of organic production is to develop enterprises that are sustainable and
consistent with a natural perpetuation of species and the environment.
As an organic agriculture practitioner, knowledge and skills are important. The following are the core
competencies in organic agriculture operations as prescribed by the Technical Education and Skills
Development Authority (TESDA) Training Regulations. (Note: These competencies will be discussed
in the next lessons)
1) Raise organic chicken; 4) Produce organic concoction and extracts;
2) Produce organic vegetables; 5) Raise organic hogs; and
3) Produce organic fertilizers; 6) Raise organic small ruminants
B. Career Opportunities in Organic Agriculture;
A person who has achieved the competencies in organic agriculture is qualified to be:
• Organic Agriculture Farmer • Organic Concoctions and Extracts
• Organic Chicken Raiser Producer
• Organic Hogs Raiser • Organic Fertilizer Producer
• Organic Small Ruminants Raiser • Agriculture Entrepreneur (Agripreneur)
• Organic Vegetable Farmer • Organic agriculture consultant
• Certified Organic seeds producer
However, agriculture is not just about farming. A career in agriculture can open the doors to
education and pave the way to a prosperous career. Agriculture crosses over all disciplines so career
choices are endless. Entrepreneurs, marketing, educators, liaisons, engineering, communications,
traveling, medicine, and even psychology fall under careers that pertain to agriculture.

Personal Entrepreneurial Competencies (PECS)


Entrepreneur – a person who organizes, develops, operates, and engages in his/her own business
Entrepreneurship – organizing, developing, operating, and engaging in one’s own business
Personal Entrepreneurial Competencies (PECS) – qualities, characteristics, skills, abilities,
knowledge, and behavior that a person must possess to become a successful entrepreneur

WHAT MAKES UP A SUCCESSFUL ENTREPRENEUR?


An accomplished entrepreneur have a passion to produce and sell to an identified market or even
to serve target clients. These contributed to their success. Likewise, they accumulated wealth because
they possess characteristics, lifestyles, and skills, suited to their chosen businesses. Below are a few
important characteristics / traits / attributes of a good entrepreneur:
1) Hardworking: This refers to working diligently and being consistent about it.
2) Confident: Entrepreneurs have self-reliance in one’s ability and judgment.

3) Disciplined: Successful entrepreneurs always stick to the plan and fight the temptation to do what
is unimportant.
4) Committed: Good entrepreneurs assume full responsibility for their business.
5) Ability to accept change: Nothing is permanent but change. When you own a business, you should
cope with and thrive on changes.
6) Creative: An entrepreneur should be creative and innovative to stay in the business and to have an
edge over the other competitors.
7) Has the initiative: You must put yourself in a position where you are responsible for the failure or
success of your business.
8) Profit-oriented: An entrepreneur enters the world of business to generate profit or additional
income. You must see to it that the business can generate income.
9) Optimistic: Be someone who always feels positive in every effort to achieve something.
10) Self-control: In any situation that needs to be handled, never react immediately. Instead, respond
to the situation in the most legal and beneficial ways.
11) Courageous: Be a risk-taker with alternative courses of action on hand. Business risks are always
there however, one’s readiness to face, reduce or eliminate them depends on how brave you can
be.
12) Well-defined values: Be precise in your principles or standards.
13) High energy level: Competitive entrepreneurs are fueled to succeed. Your passion in the endeavor
is an energy enhancer. Success in business comes from your being passionately energetic.
14) Leadership ability: Guide, direct and influence people according to what benefits the business.
15) Responsible: As a business leader, you are accountable to everyone and everything for the
business including your strategies. Value everything and everyone as you value yourself.
16) Desire for immediate feedback: Pay close attention to what the market generally is saying to your
products or services. This feedback becomes the bases of further product or services development.
17) Strong desire to achieve: Develop a competitive attitude. Right pricing and quality-based product
development or service delivery will draw more business revenues.
18) Ability to learn from past failures: Bad experiences in business should never be taken as
traumatic. Benchmark on past experiences to know which decision to take.
19) Persistence: Face a significant obstacle with a good plan of action.
20) Persuasion and Networking. Always be ready to give facts and benefits to convince customers to
patronize products and services offered. To accomplish the business objectives, key people can be
used as agents or channels to hasten product and services delivery to customers.
