Application
The SKF Electrical Discharge Detector
Pen TKED 1 (EDD Pen) is a user-friendly,
simple to use, ergonomic instrument for
detecting electrical discharges in electric
motor bearings. The TKED 1 uses
magnetic field sensing technology to
detect electrical discharges remotely.
Unlike the laboratory type methods of
detecting electrical discharges in electric
motor bearings, no wired equipment
such as oscilloscopes are required. This
non contact method results in a safer,
faster and easier way to detect electrical
discharges.
Description
The TKED 1 is capable of detecting
sparks generated in electrical motor
bearings when running. Any electrical
motor driven by a variable frequency
drive (VFD) can potentially face severe
bearing electrical erosion, causing fluting
of the bearings. When used in
accordance with the instructions for use,
the antenna of the TKED 1 picks up the
signal emitted when electrical discharges
occur in the bearing, and displays the
count of discharges on an LCD screen.
After switching the TKED 1 on, using the
START/STOP button, a LCD segment
check is performed. The user can then
select from three different time bases of
detection; indefinite (default), ten
seconds or thirty seconds. To start
counting, press the START/STOP button.
At the end of the time period the total
count of electrical discharges detected is
displayed. In indefinite mode press the
START/STOP button to stop counting.

To extend battery life the TKED 1 is
equipped with an auto-off feature; this
switches the instrument off
automatically if not used for 5 minutes.
A user selectable backlight feature is
also provided, to allow the TKED 1 to be
used in dimly lit areas. Low battery life
is indicated by a warning sign.
The TKED 1 is supplied complete in a
sturdy carry case,with batteries, one
spare antenna and instructions for use.
NOTE: If the antenna is positioned away
from the bearing, then some motor
reactive currents may be also detected.

Safety
The TKED 1 enhances user safety as it
detects electrical discharges remotely.
However as rotating electrical equipment
is a potential safety hazard, safety
goggles and other personal protective
equipment in accordance with local
regulations must be worn.
The TKED 1 is not approved for
use in areas where there is a risk
of explosion, and must not be
used in such areas.
