WORD PROCESSING:

Writing, editing, and production of documents, as letters, reports, and books, through the use of
a computer program or a complete computer system designed to facilitate rapid and efficient
manipulation of text.
Abbreviation: WP.

GRAPHIC PROGRAMS
In c
omputer graphics, graphics software or image editing software is a program or
collection of programs that enable a person to manipulate visual images on a computer.
Currently A dobe Photoshop is one of the most used and best-known graphics programs in the
Americas, having displaced more custom hardware solutions in the early 1990s, but was initially
subject to various litigation. C
orelDraw holds a stronger user base in Europe than Adobe.

DATABASES
is an organized collection of data. The data are typically organized to model aspects of reality in
a way that supports processes requiring information. For example, modelling the availability of
rooms in hotels in a way that supports finding a hotel with vacancies.

Database management systems (DBMSs) are computer software applications that interact
with the user, other applications, and the database itself to capture and analyze data

SPREADSHEETS
an electronic document in which data is arranged in the rows and columns of a grid and can be
manipulated and used in calculations.
a computer program that calculates numbers and organizes information in columns and rows
: a document that has columns and rows which are used to calculate numbers and organize
information

EDUCATIONAL SOFTWARE
Educational software is computer software, the primary purpose of which is teaching or
self-learning. Software to help with learning and organization of study material. Similar to having
a tutor to assist with studying. S
tudyX flash card maker is a great example, and includes
millions of subjects and can be customized for almost any learning.
There are highly specific niche markets for educational software, including:
teacher tools and classroom management software (remote control and monitoring software,
filetransfer software, document camera and presenter, free tools,...)

Driving test software

Interactive geometry software
Language learning software (KVerbos or E nglish in a Flash, for example)
Mind Mapping Software such as MindGenius which provides a focal point for discussion, helps
make classes more interactive, and assists students with studying, essays and projects.
Notetaking
Software for enabling simulated dissection of human and animal bodies (used in medical and
veterinary college courses)[4]
Spelling tutor software
Typing tutors (KTouch, Mario Teaches Typing, TypingWeb, Ratatype or Mavis Beacon, for
example)
Medical and healthcare educational software
Apps or applications created for educational purposes that are installed on mobile devices and
provide information on a specific subject.

POWERPOINT PRESENTATION
The term "PowerPoint presentation" was coined when Microsoft introduced its software program
PowerPoint. PowerPoint is commonly used by presenters as a digital aid when presenting their
topic to an audience. Microsoft has called this type of software a "presentation", which is a
misnomer. Many presenters often forget that they are the presentation that the audience came
to see, not their PowerPoint presentation.

INTERNET/ WWW
The Internet and the World Wide Web have a whole-to-part relationship. The Internet is
the large container, and the Web is a part within the container. It is common in daily
conversation to abbreviate them as the "Net" and the "Web", and then swap the words
interchangeably. But to be technically precise, the Net is the restaurant, and the Web is the
most popular dish on the menu.

EMAIL
An email message is a text, typically brief and informal, that is sent or received over a computer
network.

DESKTOP PUBLISHING
the production of printed matter by means of a desktop computer having a layout
program that integrates text and graphics

DISCUSSION MAILING LIST

A mailing list is an electronic discussion forum that anyone can subscribe to. When someone
sends an email message to the mailing list, a copy of that message is broadcast to everyone
who is subscribed to that mailing list.
A mailing list is a list of people who subscribe to a periodic mailing distribution on a
particular topic. On the Internet, mailing lists include each person's e-mail address rather than
a postal address. Mailing lists have become a popular way for Internet users to keep up with
topics they're interested in. Many software producers and other vendors are now using them as
a way to keep in touch with customers.

SOCIAL MEDIA APPLICATIONS

A term used to describe a variety of Web-based platforms, applications and technologies that
enable people to socially interact with one another online. Some examples of social mediasites
and applications include Facebook, YouTube, Del.icio.us,T
 witter, Digg, blogs and other
sites that have content based on user participation and user-generated content (UGC).

CHAT ROOMS, FORUMS

A virtual room where a chat (Real-time communication between two users via
computer) session takes place. Technically, a chat room is really a channel, but the
term room is used to promote the chat metaphor

.
MULTI-MEDIA DESIGN
Multimedia is more than one concurrent presentation medium (for example, on CD-ROM or a
Web site). Although still images are a different medium than text, multimedia is typically used
to mean the combination of text, sound, and/or motion video.

DECISION SUPPORT SYSTEMS

is a computer program application that analyzes business data and presents it so that users can
make business decisions more easily
is any system of input available to help a person or an organization make decisions.
An example of a decision support system is a group of computers that helps a business run
numbers to analyze so that the business can make the best financial decisions.
An example of a decision support system is a group of friends who provide information and
emotional support to a person who is going through a divorce.

NURSING INFORMATION SYSTEMS

Nursing information systems (NIS) are computer systems that manage clinical data from a
variety of healthcare environments, and made available in a timely and orderly fashion to aid
nurses in improving patient care.
To achieve this, most Nursing Information Systems are designed using a database and at least
one nursing classification language such as North American Nursing Diagnosis (NANDA),
Nursing Intervention Classification (NIC) and Nursing Diagnosis Extension and Classification
(NDEC).

HOSPITAL INFORMATION SYSTEMS

A hospital information system (HIS) is an element of health informatics that focuses mainly on
the administrational needs of hospitals.
The purpose of a hospital information system (HIS) is to manage the information that health
professionals need to perform their jobs effectively and efficiently. Information Requirements:
Operational Requirements
up-to-date factual information
necessary for day to day tasks
Planning requirements
short- and long-term decisions about patient care
decisions about hospital management
Documentation Requirements
the maintenance of records
accreditation
legal record

Community Information Systems

ELECTRONIC HEALTH RECORDS

An electronic health record (EHR), or electronic medical record (EMR), is a systematic
collection of electronic health information about an individual patient or population.[1] It is a
record in digital format that is theoretically capable of being shared across different
health care settings. In some cases this sharing can occur by way of network-connected,
enterprise-wide information systems and other information networks or exchanges. EHRs may
include a range of data, including demographics, medical history, medication and
allergies, immunization status, laboratory test results, radiology images, vital signs, personal
statistics like age and weight, and billing information.

ELECTRONIC MEDICATION SYSTEM

Hospital electronic medication management systems (EMMS) can enable prescribing,
supplying, administering and reconciling of medicines to be completed electronically. Electronic
medication management covers the hospital medication cycle including prescribing by doctors,
review and dispensing of medication orders by pharmacists, and administration of medications
by nurses. It can reduce medication errors through improved prescription legibility, dose
calculation and clinical decision support, and enables best practice information to
be more readily available to prescribers and improves linkages between clinical information
systems. 1 Electronic medication management can also improve efficiency in the medication
management process, such as reducing the time required to locate paper medication charts or
to supply non-imprest medicines

E-HEALTH SYSTEMS
E-health is the transfer of health resources and health care by electronic means. It
encompasses three main areas:
The delivery of health information, for health professionals and health consumers, through
the Internet and telecommunications.
Using the power of IT and e-commerce to improve public health services, e.g. through
the education and training of health workers.
The use of e-commerce and e-business practices in health systems management.
E-health provides a new method for using health resources - such as information, money, and
medicines - and in time should help to improve efficient use of these resources. The Internet
also provides a new medium for information dissemination, and for interaction and collaboration
among institutions, health professionals, health providers and the public.

TELE-HEALTH SYSTEMS
Telehealth is the delivery of health-related services and information via telecommunications
technologies. Telehealth could be as simple as two health professionals discussing a case over
the telephone or as sophisticated as doing robotic surgery between facilities at different ends of
the globe.
Telehealth is an expansion of telemedicine, and unlike telemedicine (which more narrowly
focuses on the curative aspect) it encompasses preventative, promotive andcurative aspects.
Originally used to describe administrative or educational functions related to telemedicine, today
telehealth stresses a myriad of technology solutions. For example, physicians use email to
communicate with patients, order drug prescriptions and provide other health services.

WEB SITE DESIGN

Web design encompasses many different skills and disciplines in the production and
maintenance of websites. The different areas of web design include web graphic design;
interface design; authoring, including standardised code and proprietary software; user
experiencedesign; and search engine optimization.

FLASH ANIMATION
A Flash animation or Flash cartoon is an animated film which is created by Adobe Flash or
similar animation software and often distributed in the SWF file format. The term Flash
animation not only refers to the file format but to a certain kind of movement and visual style.
RESEARCH SOFTWARE
Qualitative Research Software provides computer assistance for managing, coding and
analysing large collections of documents. It helps researchers to perform rigorous qualitative
analysis tasks in less time. With such qualitative research software, the amount of time spent in
manual and clerical tasks is highly reduced allowing researchers to focus on the analysis of the
qualitative data presented by the qualitative software and then to come up with useful
conclusions and advices. - See more at:

ELECTRONIC PORTFOLIOS
An electronic portfolio (also known as an eportfolio, e-portfolio, digital portfolio, or
online portfolio) is a collection of electronicevidence assembled and managed by a user,
usually on the Web.
An ePortfolio (electronic portfolio) is an electronic collection of evidence that shows your
learning journey over time. Portfolios can relate to specific academic fields or your lifelong
learning. Evidence may include writing samples, photos, videos, research projects, observations
by mentors and peers, and/or reflective thinking. The key aspect of an eportfolio is your
reflection on the evidence, such as why it was chosen and what you learned from the process of
developing your eportfolio. (Adapted from Philippa Butler’s “Review of the Literature on
Portfolios and Eportfolios” (2006), page 2.)

An ePortfolio is not a specific software package, but more a combination of process (a series of
activities) and product (the end result of the ePortfolio process). Presentation portfolios can be
created using a variety of tools, both computer desktop tools and online (Barrett, 2000; Barrett,
2004-2008). Most commercial ePortfolio tools are focused on the product (right-hand) side of
the diagram below, although some open source tools contain some of the Web 2.0-type tools
that enhance the process (left-hand) side of the diagram, such as blogs, social networking, and
RSS feeds.

WEBCASTINGCYBERCASTING
the broadcasting of news, entertainment, etc., using the Internet, specifically the World Wide
Web.Webcasting is a general term in IT that refers to broadcasting or presenting over
the Internet. As faster IP speeds and more efficient digital video and audio technologies have
added capacity to this medium, more businesses and other parties are using webcasting, rather
than other means of audiovisual presentation.

VIDEOCONFERENCING
A technology that allows users in different locations to hold face-to-face meetings without having
to move to a single location. This technology is particularly convenient for business users in
different cities or even different countries because it saves the time, expense and hassle
associated with business travel. Uses for video conferencing include holding routine meetings,
negotiating business deals and interviewing job candidates.

VIRTUAL REALITY, SIMULATION

Virtual reality can be defined as an upcoming technology that makes users feel in a Virtual
Environment (VE) by using computer hardware and s oftware. It was originally conceived as a
digitally created space which humans could access by donning special computer equipments. It
enables people to deal with information more easily. VR provides a different way to see and
experience information, one that is dynamic and immediate. For example, in a computer game,
user’s joystick motions are tracked and the objects in the game are moved according to the
joystick movements. In the same way a simulated, three-dimensional world is created around
the user in which he/she could interact with objects, people, and environments. Typically
three-dimensional life-sized images with support of audio devices are presented around the
user and the perspective is modified in accordance with the user input (generally head or eye
movements). Many devices along with the computers are used to create a virtual environment.

Internet Radio/Video/TV

E-LEARNING
Learning conducted via electronic media, typically on the Internet.
Quite simply, e-learning is electronic learning, and typically this means using a computer to
deliver part, or all of a course whether it's in a school, part of your mandatory business training
or a full distance learning course.
In the early days it received a bad press, as many people thought bringing computers into the
classroom would remove that human element that some learners need, but as time has
progressed technology has developed, and now we embrace smartphones and tablets in the
classroom and office, as well as using a wealth of interactive designs that makes distance
learning not only engaging for the users, but valuable as a lesson delivery medium.

PDA, SMART PHONES

Personal Digital Assistant or more commonly known as PDAs sprouted from the need to have
an organized schedule and contact list. Prior to the PDA, businessmen used organizers, which
are little notebooks with specific dates to write your appointments and an alphabetical section
where you can write your contacts. PDAs does all this while adding search functionalities at the
very minimum. A smartphone is simply a merger between a mobile phone and a PDA.

Short for personal digital assistant, this is the name given to small handheld devices that
combine computing, telephone/fax, Internet and networking features. A typical PDA can function
as a cellular phone, fax sender, Web browser and personal organizer. These devices are
usually pen-based, which requires the use of a stylus rather than a keyboard for input. PDAs
today are available in either a stylus or keyboard version. Traditionally, PDAs have not had
phone or fax services.
A smartphone is considered to be the combination of the traditional PDA and cellular phone,
with a bigger focus on the cellular phone part. These handheld devices integrates mobile phone
capabilities with the more common features of a handheld computer or PDA. Smartphones
allow users to store information, e-mail, install programs, along with using a mobile phone in
one device. A smartphone's features is usually more oriented towards mobile phone options
than the PDA-like features. There is no industry standard for what defines a smartphone, so any
mobile device that has more than basic cellphone capabilities can actually be filed under the
smartphone category of devices.
In summing up the differences between these common mobile communications devices you
could say that a PDA phone is more PDA than phone and a smartphone is more phone than
PDA. And, of course, a cellular phone is more phone than anything else.

Digital Camera and Photo

EDUCATIONAL GAMES
An educational game is a game designed to teach humans about a specific subject and to
teach them a skill. As educators, governments, and parents realize the psychological need and
benefits of gaming have on learning, this educational tool has become mainstream.
