The only notable ancient astronomer in Roman

Alexandria was Ptolemy. Along with being an

astronomer, Ptolemy was also a mathematician, a
geographer, and an astrologer. He had a mixed-up
cultural background, which was appropriate for his
broad and adaptable intellectual interests. Ptolemy was
an Egyptian who lived in Egypt, wrote his theories in
Greek, and had a first name that indicated he was a
Roman citizen: Claudius. The Roman emperor
presumably gave Ptolemy's ancestor the name as a gift.
Ptolemy studied, applied, and consolidated Greek
knowledge and facts about the known Cosmos; this is
known as the Ptolemy view of the universe or
Ptolemaic universe
