LISTENING

Listening to recognise and to interpret the speaker's intentions

Primarily, a good listener must hear and recognise the speech or sounds focused toward them,
comprehend the message of those sounds, critically assess that message, remember what
has been said, verbally or non-verbally respond to the information received.

The intonation and tone of a speaker provide clues as to the speaker's intentions or views.
For example, the speaker's intentions could be to inform, educate, advise or reprimand. The
speaker's views could be neutral, biased, negative or positive. The speaker's tone also may
provide insights to the listeners on the speaker's feelings and attitude, which directly affect
how the speaker relays the information.
