MATH 002 Lesson 3 Assignment

Name: ______LYKA C. VIDAL________________ Score: ______/30____

Year & Section:______BSRT-1 ______________ Date: _____________________________________

A. Write each of the statements in symbolic form. (2 points each)

B. Let v: “I will take a vacation
p: “I get the promotion,”
t: “I am transferred”

1. If I am not transferred, then I will take a vacation. _________t v_________

2. If I am transferred, then I will not take a vacation. _________t ~ v ________
3. If I will not take a vacation, then I will not be transferred and I get the promotion.
___(~ v)_ ___(~t ^ p)__
4. If I am not transferred and I get the promotion, then I will take a vacation.
____(~t ^ p ) ____(v)_______________
5. If I get the promotion, then I am transferred and I will take a vacation.
____(p) (t ^ v)___________________

C. Determine whether the following argument is valid or invalid. (10 pts.)

“If I can’t buy the house (b), then at least I can dream about it (d). I can buy the house or at
least I can dream about it. Therefore, I can buy the house.”

b d

~ b v d_____
:. ~ b

Truth table

b d b d ~bvd ~b
T T T T F
T F F F F
F T T T T
F F T T T
Conclusion is true, first premise and second premise are both true
- Argument is valid
D. In the movie Shrek 3, Prince Charming asked Pinocchio “Where is Shrek?” Since Pinocchio
can’t lie because Prince Charming will know if he’s lying, he replied with “ I don’t know where
he’s not.” Is this response logically equivalent to “I know where he is.”? Examine the
statement, “If I don’t know where Shrek is not (~q), then I know where he is (p).” in symbolic
logic using a truth table. Identify if it is a tautology, contradiction or contingency. (10 pts.)

p q p q ~q p
T T T T
T T T T
T F F T
T F F F
T T F F
F T F F

From the truth table, it is neither a tautology nor a contradiction. Therefore, it is contingency.
