Example 2/-By using MDOF for (stiff building)with two degree of free dome
Which has following properties:
m1 = 0.2 kN.s2/mm, and m2 = 0.4 kN.s2/mm

the building has damping of 5%

Solution the displacement vector

U= 𝑉1
𝑉2

The R matrix will be R= 11 because the mass1 and mass two have the same direction of movement and have the
ability of move in same time with same direction thus the value will be one for both.

step 1/ write matrix of mas

0.2 0
m=[ ]
0 0.4
step2 / write the equation of solution and find all required parameters:
| [K] - 𝜔2 [M] | = 0

|100 [
1 −1] − 𝜔2 [0.2 0 ]| = 0 now simplify the matrix by find the way to make it east for solution as
−1 3 0 0.4
following

|100 [
1 −1] − 𝜔2 0.2 [1 0]| = |[ 1 −1] − 𝐵 [1 0]| = it can be done by divided both side over 100
−1 3 0 2 −1 3 0 2
The value of B= 𝜔2 0.2/100

= |[
1−𝐵 −1 ]| = 0 the solution will be B2-2.5 B+1=0, solve this equation we will get B = 0.5 B =2
1 2
−1 3 − 2𝐵
Thus the 𝜔1 = 15.81 𝑟𝑎𝑑/𝑠 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝜔2 = 31.62 𝑟𝑎𝑑/𝑠𝑒𝑐.
For Mode 1

1 −1 0.2 0 1
100 [ ] − 15.812 [ ] =
−1 3 0 0.4 𝑉2

To simplify the solution, assume V1 equal 1 and solve the V2 = 0.5

For mode 2

Use the same strategy with replace the value with 𝜔2

1 −1 0.2 0 1
100 [ ] − 31.622 [ ] =
−1 3 0 0.4 𝑉2

Also the value of v1 will be equal to one and then solve ,

We will get the value of v2 = -1

Step 2/ complete the matrix of shape vector as following

1 1
∅=[ ]
0.5 −1
Step 3/ doing the mode analysis for mode 1
0.2 0 1
£1= {∅1}𝑇 {𝑀}{𝑅} = [1 0.5] [ ] = 0.4 KN.s2/mm
0 0.4 1
0.2 0 1
m*1= {∅1}𝑇 {𝑀}{∅1} = [1 0.5] [ ] = 0.3 KN.s2/mm
0 0.4 0.5
Г1= £1/m* = 1.33

Step 4/ find time depending on 𝜔1, T = 2π/ 𝜔1 = 0.4S from the figure above Sd1=
0.022m and Sa1= 6m/s2

1 29
{U1} = {∅1} Г1 Sd1= (1.33)(22) = mm
0.5 15
0.2 0 1 1600
{F1}= {𝑀}{∅1} Г1 Sa1 = [ ] (1.33)(6000) = KN
0 0.4 0.5 1600

Step 5 / calculate the value of mode 2 as following by using value of mode two.
0.2 0 1
£2= {∅1}𝑇 {𝑀}{𝑅} = [1 − 1] [ ] = - 0.2 kN.s2/mm
0 0.4 1
0.2 0 1
m*2= {∅1}𝑇 {𝑀}{∅1} = [1 − 1] [ ] = 0.6 kN.s2/mm
0 0.4 −1

Г1= £2/m*= -0.2/0.6 = -0.33

find time depending on 𝜔2, T = 2π/ 𝜔2 = 0.2 S from the figure above Sd2= 0.007m and Sa2=
7m/s2

{U2} = {∅2} Г2 Sd2= 1 (−0.33)(7) =

−2
mm
−1 2
0.2 0 1 −466
{F2} = {𝑀}{∅2} Г2 Sa2 = [ ] (-0.33)(7000) = KN
0 0.4 −1 932

Step 6/ the total response is found using the SRSS method, as following
U1 max= √292 + 22 = 29mm

U2 max= √152 + 22 = 15.13mm

V max= √132002 + 4662 = 3233 KN

M max= √144002 + 0 = 14400 KN.m

Mode 1 Mode 2

1600 466

1600 932

∑ 𝑓𝑥 = 0 , 𝑉𝑚𝑎𝑥1 = 3200 ∑ 𝑓𝑥 = 0 , 𝑉𝑚𝑎𝑥2 = 466

∑ 𝑀 = 0 , 𝑀 = 1600 ∗ 6 + 1600 ∗ 3 = 14400 𝐾𝑁. 𝑀 ∑ 𝑀 = 0 , 𝑀 = −466 ∗ 6 + 932 ∗ 3 = 0

Note// when find the value of Sd and Sa you have take care that, the scale in log.
