Goals:
1. Students understand the concept of compound sentence.
2. Students know how to write compound sentences.
3. Students are able to use coordinating conjunctions in
compound sentences.
Introduction:

❑Sentence is….. a set of words that is complete in itself,


typically containing a subject and predicate, conveying
a statement, question, exclamation, or command, and
consisting of a main clause and sometimes one or
more subordinate clauses.

Introduction:

❑A simple sentence has the most basic elements that make it


a sentence: a subject, a verb, and a completed thought.

❑Example: Mary waited for the train → “Mary” = subject,


“waited” = verb

❑The train was late. → "The train" = subject, "was" = verb

Introduction:

❑ A compound sentence refers to a sentence made up of two


independent clauses (or complete sentences) connected to one
another with a coordinating conjunction.

❑ Example: Mary waited for the train, but the train was late.

Introduction:

❑ A complex sentence is made up of an independent clause and one or


more dependent clauses connected to it. A dependent clause is similar
to an independent clause, or complete sentence, but it lacks one of the
elements that would make it a complete sentence.

❑ Example: While she waited at the train station, Mary realized that the
train was late.

What is Compound Sentence?

❑ Compound sentences are those sentences that have more than


one independent clauses.

❑ Those sentences that are actually two complete thoughts


combined into one.

❑ An independent clause is a complete sentence, or thought, that


has a subject and a verb.

❑ An independent clause contains three things:


❑ A subject (something or someone that the sentence is about)
❑ An action (a verb - something that is being done)
❑ A complete thought (there are no questions as to meaning at
the end of the sentence)

Example:
❖ And (dan) → I like coffee, and Mary likes tea

❖ But (tetapi) → She doesn’t want a bad score, but she doesn’t study

❖ Or (atau) → You can watch a movie, or you can listen to a song

❖ So (jadi) → James works very hard, so James wins the competition

❖ For (karena) → He brings an umbrella, for it is rainy season

❖ Nor (juga) → He will not be at home nor will he be at school.

❖ Yet (tapi) → The pain was really bad, yet he refused to see a doctor
