Take into consideration the


following questions:
• What are the main ideas?
• What are the crucial details
necessary for supporting the
ideas?
• How about summarizing
the story we read
yesterday?
Study the sentence below.
Before Galang Kaluluwa died, he instructed
Bathala to bury him in his preferred spot and
Bathala did as he was told.
The sentence above has two independent
clauses and one dependent clause.
Can you identify the two independent clauses?
What about the dependent clause?
This type of sentence is called COMPOUND-
COMPLEX sentence.
A compound-complex
sentence is a sentence
having two or more
independent clauses and
one or more dependent
clauses.
A compound-complex sentence consists of
tree parts:
• There is the compound part which
means that two simple sentences are
joined by a coordinating conjunction or a
comma.
• And the third part is the interrupter or
the dependent on one of the other parts
of the sentence.
Examples:

1. I decided to enrol in an English program and my


friend Richard came along with me; however, the
program is already closed when we arrived.
2. Even though the English program is filled up, I
will still try my luck, but my friend Richard
changed his mind.
3. I insistently talked to the instructor because of
my determination to learn, and yes, she allowed
me to be part of her class.
4. I am very much elated for it was a dream come
true although Richard and I will not be together.
Directions:Draw a slash mark(/) to separate the
independent clauses from the dependent
clauses of each sentence. Circle the
coordinating conjunction used.
1. I usually use a pick whenever I play the
guitar, or I just use my finger.
2. Even though he prefers to eat with a
fork, he chooses to use chopsticks in
Chinese restaurants, even if they are
not easy to use.
3. If the Mayor gets re-elected this May, he
will serve another four years, but it will not
be an easy win.
4. We decided that the movie was too
violent, but our cousins, who like to watch
thriller movies, thought that we were
wrong.
5. Although I like going camping, I have not
had the time to go lately, and I have not
found anyone to go with.

5. Wicked Regina cast a spell on the
entire city, so the citizens decided to
rebel.
6. While waiting for the paint to dry,
Angela went to Home Depot, and Martin
organized the kitchen appliances.
7. After listening to the Kanye West CD, I
have new respect for his music.
8. After the teacher chose groups, John
and Sara were selected as partners for a
project, yet Sarah did most of the work.
Combine the sentences to make one
compound-complex sentence.
1. Susan teaches the kids who live in the neighborhood. They
meet in the evenings after she comes home from work.
2. The doctor wants to prescribe physical therapy, and he
asked me to see a specialist. He recommended Dr. Smith.
3. Anthony told us about the assembly of the products.
Unfortunately, he didn't tell us about where they were
made.
4. We managed to finish the exercise on time and passed the
exam. However, it was very difficult.
5. The man spoke little English. Mary understood him, but
couldn't help.
Answers
1. Susan teaches the kids who live in the neighborhood
and they meet in the evenings after she comes home
from work.
2. The doctor wants to prescribe physical therapy, and he
wants me to see Dr. Smith whom he recommended.
3. Anthony instructed us on how the products are
assembled, but he failed to tell us where they were
made.
4. Although the exercise was difficult, we managed to
finish it on time, so we passed the exam.
5. Mary understood the man who spoke little English, but
she was unable to help him.

the strange noise.
