1. Introduction
Cumbria, Northumberland, Tyne and Wear NHS Foundation Trust (CNTW) provides
a range of mental health, learning disability and neurological care services across
the North East and North Cumbria.
We employ over 7,000 staff and serve a population of approximately 1.7 million
providing services across an area totaling 4,670 square miles from over 60 sites
across North Cumbria, Northumberland, Newcastle, North Tyneside, Gateshead,
South Tyneside and Sunderland. We have a number of regional and national
specialist services.
The Trust has a budget of more than £350 million a year.
The Trust provides a wide spectrum of mental health, learning disability, neuro-
rehabilitation, forensic and substance misuse services as well as other specialist
services. The Trust has several nationally renowned services, including specialist
services for adults with refractory mental illness, mental health services for young
people with a learning disability; forensic services and learning disability services;
psychotherapy services, neuropsychiatry; a mother and baby inpatient service and
drug and alcohol services for both adults and young people.

2. Service Details
CNTW trust is a large and successful mental health Foundation Trust providing mental
health specialist services in the North East of England and Cumbria, rated
‘Outstanding’ by the CQC. We are highly rated for the quality of postgraduate medical
education nationally and we come second in the North East of England for
postgraduate medical education.
The trust hosts a number of training posts from HEE. We currently advertising vacant
posts for up to a six month period. The post holder would work into one of the vacant
training posts and have the same experiences a trainee within training would have
including regular educational and clinical supervision and access to postgraduate
education. The post is not however being advertised as a training post but as a trust
grade doctor; if the post holder wanted to later pursue a place on the training scheme
we would support them in this through relevant training.
Medical Education Department
Education and innovation are an increasingly important part of CNTW Trust business.
The Trust medical education department sits within the medical directorate and brings
together undergraduate and postgraduate education, the latter covering both doctors
in training and consultants. The close integration of these different areas of education
encourages joint initiatives, skill sharing and defining and achieving common goals.
Each clinical site across the trust has access to educational resources both in the form
of clinicians with defined roles that are job planned and facilities to support this. There
are two main bases one in Newcastle and the second in Sunderland that provide
administrative and management support to the teaching programmes.
Induction
At the beginning of your placement you will take part in an induction programme. The
induction will introduce you to the trust if you have not previously worked with us
before. As part of the induction you will be introduced to the workplace and informed
of the requirements of the post, including your on call commitments.
Supervision arrangements
Clinical supervision is provided by Senior Medical Staff within the team as required.
Weekly educational supervision is provided by the Consultant.
There will be a minimum of one hour per week formal supervision and there will be
ongoing clinical supervision as required. Supervision and support is provided by
members of the MDT as outlined above on an ongoing basis during regular clinical
duties.

3. Duties of Post Holder


This teaching & education fellowship post is suitable for a registered medical
practitioner with at least two years post registration experience, possessing
MRCPsych or equivalent, who wishes to gain training and experience in medical
education. The post offers exciting opportunities for developing teaching skills and
researching medical education innovations.

Aims
• To work with other members of the educational faculty to deliver and develop
the teaching of undergraduate medical students within Cumbria,
Northumberland Tyne and Wear NHS Foundation Trust.
• To, with other members of the faculty work directly with students to provide a
link into the department and support them in achieving rotation outcomes. By
doing this improve the quality of their experience.
• With support be involved in the assessment of medical students
• To be directly involved in the delivery of some aspects of undergraduate
teaching, including supporting development of teaching roles for foundation
doctors
• To provide clinical support into a clinical team for 1.5 days per week

Objectives
• To provide the Teaching and Education Fellow with experience and training in
developing, delivering and monitoring teaching for Newcastle medical
undergraduates.
• To provide a direct supportive and educational link with students supporting
them in achieving their rotational outcomes
• To enable the Teaching and Research Fellow to undertake and evaluate an
innovative medical education project
• To provide input to areas of clinical need
• To complete certificate of medical education

Teaching
The successful applicant will work within the medical education team at CNTW for 7
sessions each week, providing regular formal teaching sessions to Newcastle
medical students as well as supporting their clinical learning whilst on placement,
acting as a mentor to a small group of students. Training in teaching methods will be
available from the Post Graduate Certificate of Clinical Education and/or ‘Training
the Teachers’ seminars at Newcastle University Regional Postgraduate Institute, or
equivalent. The Teaching and Research Fellows will be expected to attend and
satisfactorily complete one of these courses. The Certificate of Clinical Education
comprises teaching at Newcastle University and approximately 60 hours of self-
directed learning and 6 days at the University.
Cumbria, Northumberland Tyne and Wear NHS Foundation Trust is a University
Trust that provides a substantial amount of mental health teaching to medical
students throughout the new curriculum. It is the lead Trust for the Tyne, Wear and
Northumbria Base Unit delivery of Psychiatry for the Faculty of Medicine of
Newcastle University.
CNTW trust works closely with Health Education North East, it hosts fifty core
training posts, nineteen GP trainee posts, fifteen foundation posts and over thirty
higher psychiatry training posts. The post holder will be involved in developments in
postgraduate teaching and delivery of some aspects of this teaching.
The average teaching commitment of the post is 5 sessions per week but the
intensity of teaching varies at different times of the year according to the curriculum.

Clinical commitments
Clinical commitments will be for 1.5 days per week working into a clinical area within
the CNTW mental health services. This will be done under clinical supervision from a
consultant who will lead in the service the post holder works into. The doctor will be
working at the level of a core trainee and receive clinical supervision appropriate to
their experience. There will be jointly developed learning objectives for the clinical
work.
The post-holder would work on an out of hours rota alongside F2 doctors, GP’s, and
core trainees.

Location
The post holder would be based in the Medical Education department. Frequent travel
to other sites where clinic work is undertaken within the Trust would be required for
subject recruitment (including sites in Newcastle, Gateshead, Northumberland, South
Tyneside and Sunderland). Costs for public transport will be covered, if required, as
will mileage for car/bike users.
University links
Honorary Clinical Teaching Associate status in Newcastle University will be sought
for the Teaching and Education Fellow.

student fees (approx. £2335 per year)

5. Contract Agreement
The post is covered by the Terms and Conditions of Service for Hospital Medical and
Dental staff (England and Wales) as amended from time to time. Contracts have
been agreed with the BMA local negotiators, but individuals may wish to discuss this
further before acceptance

6. Occupational Health
Occupational health, counselling and physiotherapy services for CNTW staff will be
provided by People Asset Management (PAM). People Asset Management is a
private provider who has experience of offering occupational health and wellbeing
solutions to local councils, encouraging early intervention of issues to enable
employees to remain in the workplace as much as possible. PAM is a nurse-led
service with all clinicians able to deal effectively with enquiries from staff and
managers.
Face-to-face appointments will be delivered from PAM’s clinics however they also
provide telephone and secure video consultations. The locations of the clinics are:
• Forth Banks House, Skinnerburn Road, Newcastle upon Tyne, NE1 3RH
• Carleton Clinic,Cumwhinton Drive,Carlisle, CA1 3SX.
In addition, the Trust has established measures in place to support staff in their day
to day work. This includes regular information and advice available on the Intranet
and a weekly Trust wellbeing bulletin. CNTW Thrive programme provides extensive
information on wellbeing support including career, emotional, financial, physical,
psychological and social wellbeing. There are various support groups and networks
such as staff yoga, meditation, good mood café and so on.
There is also support provided by colleagues and line management. In the
unfortunate events of serious incidents at work there will be an after action review
conducted and staff wellbeing forms part of this review as part of our incidents policy.
Additional support can be identified from a local level (ward or service), local with
additional specialist support (Senior
Clinical Nurse, Psychologist, PMVA Specialist, Safeguarding Practitioner,
Pharmacist, Safety and Security Specialist) or PAM support.

7. Other Information
Infection Control
All Trust staff (clinical and non-clinical, including locum and agency staff and staff
employed by external contractors) have a personal responsibility to ensure that the
risk of infection to themselves, service users and visitors is minimised by ensuring that
they, (1) are familiar with and adhere to, current Trust policy and guidance on infection
prevention and control, (2) participate in the Trust's induction programme and
statutory/required training in infection prevention and control and (3) consider infection
prevention and control as part of their appraisal and/or personal development plans.
Terms and Conditions and Salary Scale
a) The post is subject to the Terms and Conditions of service for Specialty Doctors
England 2008 and General Whitley Council Conditions of Service, as amended
from time to time.
b) The current salary scale and progress through this will be in accordance with
the Terms and Conditions
c) For pre-employment health assessment purposes, as part of the Trust’s
Occupational Health Service, the successful candidate will be required to
complete a Health Questionnaire and Hepatitis B Status Questionnaire. These
will be treated in strict confidence. The successful applicant may be required to
undergo a medical examination.
d) To comply with HSC 2000/019 the successful candidate will be subject to
completion of a declaration stating that they are not subject to fitness to
practice proceedings by a UK or overseas licensing or regulatory body.
e) The successful candidate will be expected to undergo clearance by the
Criminal Records Bureau to an enhanced level.
f) Post holders must have full registration with the GMC and from November 2009
must hold a licence to practice.

Rehabilitation of Offenders and Fitness to Practise


In addition to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act you are not entitled to withhold any
information relating to fitness to practise. You must disclose whether or not you have
been or are the subject of fitness to practise proceedings, or if any fitness to practise
proceedings are being contemplated, by a licensing or regulatory body in the UK or
another country.
Failure to disclose a criminal offence, having been bound over or cautioned or that
you are currently the subject of criminal proceedings which might lead to a
conviction, an order binding you over or a caution, or fitness to practise proceedings
undertaken or being undertaken by an appropriate licensing or regulatory body, may
disqualify you from appointment, or result in summary dismissal/disciplinary action
and referral to the General Medical Council for consideration if such a discrepancy
came to light.
This information will be treated in confidence and will not debar you from
appointment unless the selection panel considers that it renders you unsuitable for
appointment. In reaching such a decision we will consider the nature of the
conviction/action, how long ago it took place and any other factors that may be
relevant.
Conduct, Performance and Health of Medical Staff
