In Example.2, suppose that the vehicles operate according to the following scheduling rules:
(1) vehicles delivering raw work parts from station 1 to stations 2,3, and 4 must return empty
to station 5; and (2) vehicles picking up finished parts at stations 2,3, and 4 for delivery to
station 5 must travel empty from station 1.
(a) Determine the empty travel distances associated with each delivery and develop a from-to
chart in the format of Table.
(b)The AGVs travel at a speed of 50 m/min and the traffic factor: 0.90. Assume
reliability:100%. From Example .2, the delivery distance Ld: 103.8m. Determine the value of
Le.
(c) How many automated guided vehicles will be required to operate the system?

Calculate the value of Ld (a weighted average) based on the number of delivery trips and
corresponding distances shown in the from-to chart table of the problem:

9 (50 )+5 ( 120 ) +6 ( 205 )+ 9 ( 80 ) +2 ( 85 ) +3 (170 )+ 8 ( 85 ) 4,360

Ld = = =103.8 m
9+5+6+ 9+2+3+8 42
a) The empty travel distances associated with each delivery and developed a from-to-
chart in the format of Table

Route Operation of vehicle Distance (m)

From 1 to 2 Delivery raw work parts 50
Step 1
Station 2

From 2 to 5 Empty 80
From 1 to 2 Empty 50
Step 2
From 2 to 5 Delivery finished good 80
From 1 to 3 Delivery raw work parts 120
Step 1
Station 3

From 3 to 5 Empty 170

From 1 to 3 Empty 120
Step 2
From 3 to 5 Delivery finished good 170
From 1 to 4 Delivery raw work parts 205
Step 1
Station 4

From 4 to 5 Empty 85
From 1 to 4 Empty 205
Step 2
From 4 to 5 Delivery finished good 85

Since there are two segments deliveries 3 to 4 that are similar, we can combine them.

Associated Empty
Route Trips Frequency Empty Distance
Step 1 1 to 2 2 to 5 9 80
Step 2 2 to 5 1 to 2 9 50
Step 1 1 to 3 3 to 5 3 170
Step 2 3 to 5 1 to 3 5 120
Step 1 1 to 4 4 to 5 8 85
Step 2 4 to 5 1 to 4 6 205
Then, we have the from-to chart table as below:

To
From 1 2 3 4 5
1 0/0 9/50 5/120 6/205 -
2 - 0/0 - - 9/80
3 - - 0/0 - 3/170
4 - - - 0/0 8/85
5 - - - -- 0/0

b) Determine the value of Le

Calculate the value of Le based on the number of empty trips and corresponding distances shown
in the from-to chart table in question a:
9 ( 50 ) +5 (120 )+ 6 ( 205 ) +9 ( 80 ) +3 ( 170 ) +8 ( 85 )
Le = = 104.75 m
9+5+ 6+9+3+ 8
c) The number of AGVs required to operate the system
The ideal cycle time per delivery per vehicle is given by:
Ld Le 103.8 104.75
TC = TL + + TU + = 0.5 + + 0.5 + = 5.171 min
vc vc 50 50

The available time per hour per vehicle is:

AT = 60 x A x Ft x Ew = 60 x 1 x 0.9 x 1 = 54 min/hr per vehicle
The delivery rate per hour per vehicle is calculated by:
AT 54
Rdv = = = 10.44 deliveries/hr per vehicle
T c 5.171

Total delivery rate is the total of frequency over the process:

Rf = 9 + 9 + 5 + 3 + 6 + 2 + 8 = 42 deliveries/hr
Therefore, the number of vehicles required is:
Rf 42
nc = = ≈ 4.02 vehicles
R dv 10.44

This value should be rounded up to 5 vehicles, since the number of vehicles must be an integer.
