    Athens and Sparta, the two dominant city-states in ancient Greece, fought the Peloponnesian War between 431 BC and 405 BC. Although Sparta was traditionally a land military power and Athens a naval power, Sparta had developed a navy after a six year truce in the war. Ultimately, Sparta defeated Athens at the naval battle of Aegospotami in 405 BC, bringing the Peloponnesian War to an end.
