Beginning Teachers’ Perspective on the Significance of Code of Ethics for
Professional Teachers What is the role of ethics educators? In my opinion, the goal of the instructor code of ethics is to protect the rights of all children. Teachers must understand that by accepting a teaching position, they agree to abide by the code of ethics. While almost everyone agrees that doing the right thing and avoiding doing the wrong thing is critical, not everyone agrees on what is right and wrong in any given situation. Each person has a unique and personal code of ethics. It determines an individual’s reaction to a specific event and accounts for differences in reactions demonstrated by different people in the same situation. An individual code of ethics comes into play in everyday situations that teachers face, such as when an influential parent asks for special favors for his child, when dealing with an impudent student or an impertinent remark, when dealing with colleagues, or at any point while performing the daily duties of the teacher. Another goal to achieve while adhering to your code of ethics is to make quick and wise decisions. Teachers should not put off making ethically sound decisions for long periods of time. If you have a strong ethical code, you should be able to make quick decisions and be willing to accept the consequences. Even the most sound ethical decisions lose significance when they are subjected to excessive deliberation or delay. Finally, your ethical code is revealed by how you respond to what you consider to be right and wrong. That is why a personal code of ethics is not a legally binding document. Based on what you know, you can make educated guesses and set guidelines for yourself.
