STUDY PLAN

THE UNIVERSITY OF MELBOURNE

1. COURSE PLANNING
I will take Master of Science (Chemistry), learning by coursework and focusing on
organic chemistry synthesis at The University of Melbourne (Unimelb). Unimelb is the best
university in Australia to study chemistry and provides some subjects that are related to my
future goal in my research. In addition, Unimelb consistently ranked among the leading
universities in the world. Based on Times Higher Education World University Rangkings 2017-
2018, Unimelb is the top university in Australia and number 32 in the world.
The course is planned for 2 years (full time), starting in March 2021 and will finish in
March 2023. To complete the Master of Science (Chemistry), I must be successful completion of
200 credit points, that consist of:
 Discipline component (core) subjects (12.5 points)
 Discipline elective subjects (25-50 points)
 Professional skills subject (12.5-25 points)
 Research project (125 points)
In my first-year, I will complete several subjects, while beginning work on my major research
project. In the second year, I will concentrate on my research project, while completing various
elective subjects. Each year will be divided by two semesters and each semester has 50 credit
points that must be completed.
The first semester will provide some subjects of spectrometry instrumentations that
explore the fundamentals of structure determination as applied to organic and biological
molecules. Furthemore, I will take some elective subjects such as advanced organic synthesis,
advanced physical organic chemistry, biological and medicinal chemistry, and catalysis subject.
Then, I will have my first research project at the end of semester. This combination of
background theory and range of examples will enhance my ability to acquire and analyse
experimental data of many organic synthesis. In the second semester, I will have my second
research project and I will take the subjects that can enhance understanding about advanced
methods and other fundamental principles that can be used in the synthesis.
Although the last year will be full of major research project, likewise I will take
professional skills subject to enrich my ability in communication for research scientists. As a
scientist, it is not only important to be able to experiment, research and discover, but also vital
that I can communicate my research effectively in a variety of ways. Even the most brilliant
research is wasted if no one knows it has been done and its target people do not be able to
understant about it. Thus, in this professional skills subject, I will develop my written and oral
communication skills to ensure that I can share my knowledge as effectively as possible.

2. RESEARCH TOPIC
West Nusa Tenggara (NTB) is one of the developing provinces that still need attention in
some areas particularly in its public health at low level. According to Statistics of NTB Province
(BPS NTB) 2018, NTB is most infected by 10 types of diseases both communicable and non-
communicable diseases. On the other hand, NTB has rich of ‘natural products’ from natural
resources but cannot maximally utilized because of limited of research innovation and
technology. Related to these issues, I strongly want to take research in medicinal chemistry to
transform and design the right drugs from natural products that can be used as references to
tackle of those diseases.
I hope the drug discovery will be applied appropriately in Indonesia especially in West
Nusa Tenggara. Thus, the government can use it as well as consideration to apply this model to
enhance the level of public health. In addition, the results will also be one of research innovation
and treasure of knowledge.

3. OTHER ACTIVITIES DURING THE LECTURERS

To round out my skill set, I will join chemistry research groups in drug discovery area
and I would like to gain more real-world experience by choosing to complete an internship
program. While studying, I will take advantage of the opportunities available for getting
involved with volunteering to extend my learning opportunities, connect with communities, and
enhance my employability. In addition, I will actively participate in training, seminar and
workshop. I also would like to join The Indonesian Students Association of Australia (PPIA) to
keep in touch with Indonesian Students by discussing to have a deeply thought to make
Indonesia be better through time.
