Module description:
Chemistry is an important discipline in medical, pharmacy and many other health practices. It plays a central
role in appreciating many medical disciplines including Biochemistry, Clinical medicine, Pharmacology and
therapeutics as well as Pathophysiology of a patient. It is also applicable in many other fields such as agriculture,
industry, bioengineering and many other disciplines.

The Biochemistry I & Organic Chemistry modules introduces students commencing studies in health sciences to
concepts of general and organic chemistry. The material covered in this module will be crucial for your success
in the subsequent modules of the MBChB, BChD, BPTY and BPharm programmes, as well as in the practice of
pharmacy, medicine, physiotherapy and dentistry.

The course is organised into two parts:

 In part 1 we review concepts in general chemistry that are relevant to understanding organic chemistry.
Topics covered include:

 Matter and Measurement Self-study

 Atomic Structure, Self-study
 The Periodic Table, Self-study
 Chemical Bonding, Self-study
 Chemical Formulas and Nomenclature, Self-study
 Molecular Shapes, Orbitals and Orbital Hybridisation,
 Resonance Structures,
 Intermolecular Forces and Physical Properties of Compounds, and
 Acids and Bases.

 In part 2 we discuss the concepts that are applicable to organic chemistry.

Topics covered include:

 Introduction to Organic Chemistry

 Molecular Representations and functional groups
 Organic Compounds: Alkanes and Cycloalkanes,
 Organic Compounds: Alkenes and Cycloalkenes,
 Organic Compounds: Alkynes,
 Organic Compounds: Arenes (aromatic hydrocarbons),
 Organic Compounds: Halo-alkanes (Alkyl Halides), Ethers and Amines,
 Organic Compounds: Alcohols and Phenols (Hydroxybenzenes),

 Organic Compounds: Carboxylic Acids and Carboxylic Acid Derivatives I,

 Organic Compounds: Carboxylic Acids and Carboxylic Acid Derivatives II,
 Heterocyclic Compounds,
 Stereochemistry,
 Introduction to Organic Reactions,
 Electrophilic Addition of Alkenes,
 Electrophilic Addition of Alkynes,
 Radical Reactions of Alkanes, and
 Nucleophilic Substitution and Elimination of Halo-alkanes.
 Major organic molecules (4)

Organic, and Biochemistry. 9th ed. Brooks/Cole.

2. Bruice, P.Y. 2010. Essential Organic Chemistry. 2nd ed. (Int. Ed.) Prentice Hall.

Course outcomes:
At the end of this module, students are expected to be able to:
1. Use scientific notation and significant figures in calculations
2. Describe the structure of an atom
3. Describe the arrangement of elements in the periodic table and determine the electron configuration
of the main group elements
4. Describe and explain the trends in the physical and chemical properties of elements
5. Distinguish between ionic and covalent bonding
6. Define and explain the terms empirical formula and molecular formula and determine these for a given
compound
7. Draw various representations of organic molecules, e.g. Lewis structures, line-bond structures, etc.
8. Predict the shape and bond angles for organic molecules
9. Classify organic compounds into chemical groups
10. Name organic compounds according to IUPAC rules
11. Identify the chemical and physical properties of organic compounds
12. Demonstrate understanding of the reactions of organic compounds
13. Discuss the use and significance of organic compounds in health sciences

Examination and assessments:

Assessments will be based on lecture material, assigned problems and text reading and will be given according
to the schedule noted below. There will be no make-up tests or exams given, except in case of extreme
emergency. Otherwise, a missed assessment receives a score of 0 points. No early or late final exams will be
given.
You are expected to score a continuous assessment (CA) mark of not less than 50% to be allowed to sit for the
final examination.

Your continuous assessment (CA) mark will be calculated as follows:

Course Assignments (x3) 15%
Practical labs (x8) 25%
Class test (x3) 60%

For BPharm programme, CA mark contributes 60% and the final examination 40% to the FINAL MARK.
For MBChB, BChD & BPTY, CA mark contributes 40% and the final examination 60% to the FINAL MARK.
To pass the module, your FINAL MARK must be  50%.

4
Module assignments & tests
Module assignments & tests dates will be announced by the respective lecturers.

Module examination:
Exam paper: The examination paper shall consist of MCQ only except otherwise communicated

Examination date: To be confirmed.

How to study for this module:

Learning chemistry requires you to develop disciplined study habits. To do well in this module you must study
regularly and intensively. There are a lot of material to be covered during this semester; therefore, it requires a
large time commitment from you. Class attendance is very important for your success in this course and
therefore you should plan to attend EVERY class. You need to achieve 80% attendance rate to qualify for
examination in this module. It is my suggestion that you study each chapter before as well as after it is discussed
in a lecture and that you revise each and every day. It is much better to learn the material as you go than to try
and “cram” just before the exam. Organic chemistry is a challenging subject which requires hard work and
diligence. The more effort you put into learning, the better.
