Module description:
Chemistry is an important discipline in medical, pharmacy and many other health practices. It plays a central
role in appreciating many medical disciplines including Biochemistry, Clinical medicine, Pharmacology and
therapeutics as well as Pathophysiology of a patient. It is also applicable in many other fields such as agriculture,
industry, bioengineering and many other disciplines.
The Biochemistry I & Organic Chemistry modules introduces students commencing studies in health sciences to
concepts of general and organic chemistry. The material covered in this module will be crucial for your success
in the subsequent modules of the MBChB, BChD, BPTY and BPharm programmes, as well as in the practice of
pharmacy, medicine, physiotherapy and dentistry.

Reference text books and related materials:
1. Bettelheim, F.A., Brown, W.H., Campbell, M.K. & Farrell, S.O. 2006. Introduction to General,
2. Bruice, P.Y. 2010. Essential Organic Chemistry. 2nd ed. (Int. Ed.) Prentice Hall.
Course outcomes:
At the end of this module, students are expected to be able to:
1. Use scientific notation and significant figures in calculations
2. Describe the structure of an atom
3. Describe the arrangement of elements in the periodic table and determine the electron configuration
of the main group elements
4. Describe and explain the trends in the physical and chemical properties of elements
5. Distinguish between ionic and covalent bonding
6. Define and explain the terms empirical formula and molecular formula and determine these for a given
compound
7. Draw various representations of organic molecules, e.g. Lewis structures, line-bond structures, etc.
8. Predict the shape and bond angles for organic molecules
9. Classify organic compounds into chemical groups
10. Name organic compounds according to IUPAC rules
11. Identify the chemical and physical properties of organic compounds
12. Demonstrate understanding of the reactions of organic compounds
13. Discuss the use and significance of organic compounds in health sciences
For BPharm programme, CA mark contributes 60% and the final examination 40% to the FINAL MARK.
For MBChB, BChD & BPTY, CA mark contributes 40% and the final examination 60% to the FINAL MARK.
To pass the module, your FINAL MARK must be 50%.
