Design Structure Matrix
A Design Structure Matrix (DSM) is defined as a compact,
matrix representation of a project network.

Provides an idea about various activities of any process

that are interrelated, what information is required to start
an activity, manages complex projects, does task
sequencing and iterations.

1. System elements are places down to the side of the
matrix as row headings and across the top as column
headings in the same order
2. If there exists an edge from node i and j, then the value of
element ij (row i, column j) is unity (marked with an X)
3. Otherwise, the value of the element is zero (or left empty)
4. The diagonal elements of the matrix do not have nay
interpretations

3 Basic Building Blocks
1. Parallel - system elements do not interact with each other
2. Sequential - one element influences the behavior or
decision of another element in a uni-directional fashion
3. Coupled - the flow of influence or information is
intertwined: element A influences B and vice-versa. This
cyclic dependency is called "Circuit" or "Cycle"
