Longman (page 310)

The infinitive and the '-ing' form

The full infinitive: It consists of two words “to” + verb. ()

bare infinitive: verb form without “to” (it is used without to)

the to-infinitive: where to is always used in front of the base form of the verb (to go).

The bare infinitive after modal verbs

The main use of the bare infinitive is after modal verbs. All the modal verbs
[except ought, > 11.6 in.2] must be followed by a bare infinitive (except in
short responses like Yes, I can): I can/could/may/might/wi!l/shall/should/must
leave soon Dare/need, when they are modal, are similar (Dare/Need we ask?).
The negative is formed by adding not before the infinitive: / cannot/can't go,
etc. [> 11.5.1].
The to-infinitive

Present infinitive To work, to do, to talk

Present continuous infinitive To be working
Perfect infinitive To have worked
Perfect continuous infinitive To have been worked
Present infinitive passive To be done
Perfect infinitive passive To have been done
Nominalization: nouns that refer to actions, counterparts of some verbs.

to getting it

Hey, is there a trick to getting it to switch from tub to shower. Oh. Hi, sorry. Hello!

Sheldon: Event A. A beautiful woman stands naked in our shower. Event B. We drive half way
across town to retrieve a television set from the aforementioned woman’s ex-boyfriend. Query, on
what plane of existence is there even a semi-rational link between these events?

The hair products are Sheldon’s.

So we get to have a scene with him?

Sheldon: Leonard, the TV is in the building, we’ve been denied access to the building, ergo we are

Leonard: Excuse me, if I were to give up at the first little hitch I never would have been able to

Sheldon, I’m so sorry I dragged you through this.¿
