Electrical Installation individual assignment

1. A 10KW motor is supplied from a 380V main switch fuse 50m distant. Protection is by
semi- enclosed fuse. The single core PVC cables run in conduit with two other three phase
circuits. The conductor runs throughout in an ambient temperature which will not exceed
42oC. From the IEE regulation select a more suitable c.s.a. cable.
2. Two lighting circuit groups each 2KW, p.f.= 0.98 are supplied from a 220V MCB. One
group is installed 10m away and the other 50m from the breaker. For the first 10m the
cable run together in an ambient temperature of 30oC. After the first group is separated, the
second lighting group run in an ambient temperature of 20 oC and is thermally insulated.
The conductors are Aluminum and enclosed in conduit. Choose the appropriate c.s.a.
conductors for both lightings.

3. 240V, 4KW fixed resistive load is to be fed by a PVC insulated and sheathed cable. The
cable is run alongside four similar cables and is in contact with thermal insulation on one
side only. The ambient temperature is assessed as 40oC. Protection is by semi-enclosed fuse.
the length of run is 18m. Determine the rating and the size of the cable.
4. A 10KW, 380V, p.f.= 0.8 motor is installed in a factory is supplied from MCB 200m away.
On its way it passes through the following environmental conditions:
a) outside the factory ( for about 150m) in 45oC.
b) inside the factory ( for about 40m) in 60oC in conduit and is protected by
semi- enclosed fuse.
c) Then for about 10m, it is thermally insulated and the local ambient
temperature is
65 C.

For the seek of strength the cable to the motor in the factory is copper and out side,
being the cost is comparatively low, the conductor used is Aluminum. Determine the c.s.a. of
the cable.
5. Three single phase, 220V motors rated 2KW, 3KW and 5KW of similar power factor = 0.9,
are installed 25m, 50m and 80m respectively from a main semi-enclosed fuse. For about
15m the three motor cable run together in 25oC ambient temperature. But after this the
2KW motor cable runs separately in 35oC temp. and thermally insulated. The cable to 5KW
motor runs together with the cable of the 3KW motor up to 50m in 30 oC temp. For the rest
distance the cable to 5KW motor runs in an ambient temp. of 30 oC with other two lighting
circuits in thermal insulator. Throughout the distances the cables are enclosed in conduit
except for the 2KW motor cable after it is separated from the group. If the conductor to the
3KW motor is Aluminum and for the others is copper, determine the wire sizes to each
motor.
