Project on Electrical Installation Design (of a condominium building)

1. Suppose a household has the floor plan along is the layout of furniture, equipment and appliances (all 220V) as
shown in the next page. The lighting, general socket outlet and special socket outlet requirements are as
follows:

Assume that one lighting branch circuit should consist of at most 8 light points and is fed using 2 x 2.5 mm 2 copper
wire. One general socket outlet branch circuit should consist of at most 4 points and is fed using 3 x 2.5 mm 2
copper wire including a ground wire. Each special/power socket outlet (including motor) should have a separate
branch circuit whose parameters are determined based on the power it delivers and it should also be earthed.

Assume two sub distribution boards (SDB) exist one for high powered appliances and another for lighting and
general socket outlets. The main distribution board (MDB) is near the kWh meter.

1
a) Show with an AutoCAD drawing on an A3 size paper, the schematic (wiring) diagram of the complete electrical
installation by sub grouping luminaries, general socket outlets and power sockets in to a number of branch
circuits as well as the SDB and MDB schedules.
b) For each branch circuit,
i) determine the wire size from assumption or table
ii) determine also the corresponding protective CB current rating from the same table,
iii) assuming a short circuit occurs in one of the general socket branch circuits at the first socket outlet just 10m
away from its respective SDB, determine the minimum breaking capacity of the circuit breaker associated
with this branch circuit.
c) Show, on the drawing in (a) the cable and CB size schedules of the possible SDBs & MDB for the grouped
branch circuits, connected load & maximum power demand assuming a demand factor of 0.8 in all cases.

2
d) Assuming a diversity factor of 0.65 and a future expansion of 20% determine the overall maximum power
demand, the service entrance cable size and protective circuit breaker capacity of the household
e) Prepare a tabulated bill of quantity (BoQ) of the electrical installation for a household.

2. Suppose we have a G+4 residential apartment building. On each floor there exist 6 identical independent
households each of which is identical to the one in problem (1). Each floor is supplied with a 3 phase power
(380V, 50Hz) consisting of 5 wire system (3ph+N+E) via a three pole isolation switch & fuses. Each household on
a floor is supplied with a single phase power (220V, 50Hz) with earth connection plus with its own kWh meter via
a service entrance cable tapped from the distribution and feeder cable which in turn tapped from the bus bars on
the respective floor. Household power tapping is made from the 3 ph distribution feeder alternatively to maintain
balanced ness of the 3ph system. The power feeder cable to the entire building is run upwards starting from a
manhole at the ground floor to the 4th floor through a concrete wall and floor ducts. At each floor, power is tapped
from bus bars in distribution closets to which the distribution cable is electrically connected. The figures below
show a 6-household floor plan and the guided power feeder cable in the wall and floor ducts.

3
a.Determine the cross section of each of the 5 core distribution feeder cable to a group of three households on a
floor if the phases are alternatively fed to each house and the allowed overall voltage drop is 1%.

b.Considering the diversity factor associated to all five floors is 0.65, determine the cross sectional size of the 5
core main power feeder cable for the condominium if the overall voltage drop from the manhole to the 4 th floor is
allowed to be 1% which is also assumed uniformly distributed in all the sections.

c. If a three phase, 15/0.38kV, 750 KVA, 50Hz transformer is to be used for a number of similar G + 4 buildings
in close proximity, determine the approximate number of such buildings to be supplied from such transformer if
the diversity factor associated to all buildings is 0.75.

d.Draw, on a separate sheet of paper, a one line representation of the power riser diagram consisting of the
transformer, power feeder cable, service entrance cable, switch gears, kWh meters, etc.
