DESIGN OF STONE MASONRY BREAST WALL OF HEIGHT

ABOVE GROUND 2.5 m
Introduction

This design notes presents the design calculation for stone masonry breast wall for support to rock slope.Stone Masonry wall

has been designed considering Base pressure of 7t/m2. Permissible tension in Stone masonry shall be as per IRC:40.

Permissible Crushing Strength = 1.90 Mpa

Permissible tension = 0.10 Mpa

Tension at bottom of foundation is not allowed as masonry structure but tension within the section has been kept upto the
permissible giver in IRC:40

Angle of wall friction has been considered as per book author "Joseph E. Bowles"
Reference table is shown below
In design of Stone masonry wall Friction angle considered as Angle of internal friction of back filling material i.e. φ= 32 O

Therefore, Horizontal coefficient of Active earth pressure = Ka1cos(δ)

Kha1 = 0.2562
Therefore, Vertical coefficient of Active earth pressure = Kva1sin(δ)
Kha2 = 0.1001
Total earth pressure 'Pa' = [ (w h12)
/ 2] x Kha1
Earth pressure force = Active Earth pressure + LL Surcharge
Pa = 2.306 + 1.84 = 4.150 t
Moment = 2.306 x 1.26 + 1.84 x 1.50 = 5.672 tm

Vertical active force = 0.900 t/m

Calculation for Weight of

Soil (I) = 1.00 x 2.00 x 0.00 x 3.00 = 0.000 t/m
Soil (IIA) = 0.50 x 2.00 x 0.00 x 0.00 = 0.000 t/m
Masonry (II) = 1.00 x 2.20 x 0.50 x 3.00 = 3.300 t/m
Masonry (III) = 0.50 x 2.20 x 1.95 x 0.65 = 1.394 t/m
Masonry (IV) = 0.50 x 2.20 x 1.45 x 3.00 = 4.785 t/m
Deduction = 0.50 x 2.20 x 1.95 x 0.65 = -1.394 t/m
Vertical Active Force 0.900 = 0.900 t/m
Total Weight = 8.985 t/m

Hence, from B = 12.445 - 5.67 = 0.754 > 0.65 or
8.985 < 1.30 i.e. within middle third

Eccentricity 'e' = 0.98 - 0.754 = 0.221 m

Check for Sliding

Factor of Safety = ( 0.5 x 8.985 + 2.84 ) / 4.150 = 1.767 > 1.500 OK

Check for Overturning Moment

Factor of Safety = 12.445 / 5.672 = 2.194 > 2.000 OK

DESIGN OF WALL

Active earth pressure co-efficient as per columb's theory

Angle of internal friction, φ = 32.000 deg

Angle of friction between soil and concrete, δ = 21.333 deg 0.372 rad
Surcharge angle i = 0.000 deg
Angle of wall face with horizontal α = 0.000 deg
Ka = 0.2750
ka1 = 0.2750
Therefore, Horizontal coefficient of Active earth pressure = Ka1 COS(δ)
Kha1 = 0.2562

Total earth pressure 'Pa' = [ (w h12) / 2] x Kha1

Earth pressure force = Active Earth pressure + LL Surcharge
Pa = 2.306 + 0.00 = 2.306 t
Moment = 2.306 x 1.00 + 0.00 x 1.50 = 2.31 tm

2
Section Modulus, Z = 0.704 m
2
Bending Stresses = M/Z = 3.274 t/m = 0.033 N/mm2

Weight over base of wall, P = 9.479 t

2
Area, A = 2.055 m

2
Compressive stresses = P/A = 4.612 t/m
2
= 0.046 N/mm

2 2
So, Total compressive and bending stresses = 0.079 N/mm < 1.900 N/mm
OK
2 2
Total tensile stresses = 0.046 N/mm < 0.100 N/mm
Tension within permissible limit OK
