Section A
1. Gandhiji decided to go to Muzzafarpur before Champaran because he wanted to obtain complete information about the condition
of the peasants from the lawyers who frequently represented the peasants in courts.
2. Frank Buchman’s Moral Re-Armament army was welcomed at the studio mainly because of their political association. The people
at the Gemini Studios were averse to Communism, and hence, were ready to play host to the MRA.

Apart from that, the studio people hardly had any occupation and suffered from boredom. The MRA came as a welcome change to
their monotonous days at the studio.
3. The poet uses the image of an 'endless fountain', which showers bounties on earth. He calls this an 'immortal drink' from heaven
where the earth like a fountain, pours onto us numerous beautiful sights like the sun, the moon, flowers, green forests and the clear
rills.
4. To soothe the wits of the poor, the business-minded city people attract poor people with their calculated promotional offers and
promises in such a way that poor people cannot escape the traps of the rich. The business men’s calculations work as there is a
more efficient brain behind all these promises.
5. After waiting a long while for the assassins to come, Dr. Sadao decided to help the soldier escape. The escape was successful only
because of the right guidance and help from Dr Sadao. He provided the American soldier with his boat, gave him food, made him
wear Japanese clothes, wrapped a black cloth around his head to hide his blonde hair and also instructed him to find a Korean
fishing boat, which could rescue him. He even ensured, that he provided help to the American soldier until he managed to escape
unharmed.
6. Mr. Lamb displayed signs of loneliness when Derry said that he had to go back home to tell his mother that he would stay with
Mr. Lamb, but promised to return. This was what had been happening with all his little friends in the past. In his monologue, he
mumbled," Ah...You Know. We all know. I'll come back. They never do, though." This expression clearly brings out the terrible
loneliness he suffered from and his longing for company.
Section B
7. a. A thing of beauty from the nature around us removes the pall from our dark spirits. Nature leaves an everlasting effect on us
which never passes into nothingness.
b. The old and young trees sprout branches which make a green covering to provide shade and shelter to the sheep.
c. Daffodils bloom among the green surroundings. The rills or streams of clear water make a soothing and comfortable shelter
for themselves against the hot season.
d. (i) covert (ii) boon
8. a. Aunt Jennifer’s tigers have been described as golden yellow in color. They prance fearlessly across in sleek chivalric certainty.
b. They have been called as 'denizens of a world of green' because they are the natives of dense green forests.
c. They are not afraid of men because they are brave, strong, fearless and full of confidence.
d. Her tigers are symbolic of Aunt Jennifer’s desire for freedom. They are also symbols of strength and self-confidence.
Section C
9. Sophie liked her brother, Geoff, more than anybody else because he was not in the habit of talking much and remained lost in his
own thoughts. She envied his silence and thought that he had access to an unknown world. She wanted to be a part of that world
and she fancied herself wearing glamorous clothes and being welcomed by everyone. For Sophie, Geoff symbolised liberty from
the monotonous life they had been living.
OR
Sophie planned to open a boutique after she passed out of school. When Jansie told her that opening a boutique would require a
lot of money, she said that she would become a manager and save money for her boutique. She later also added that she would
either become an actress or a fashion designer.

For a girl from a lower middle class family, such dreams are certainly far from reality. Sophie's friend Jansie who was quite
practical knew that they would ultimately have to work in the biscuit factory. She even dissuaded Sophie from indulging in such
childish fantasies. But Sophie wanted to materialise all those things which were simply not possible practically. Never for once in
the story does Sophie thought practically or came out of her dream world.
Sophie made the castles of dreams. She was a daydreamer. She thought that she would become rich in the near future. She wanted
to fulfill her dreams through her glamour. She didn't want to accept her reality and wanted to live in her fantasies. Even she always

kept on thinking about Danny Casey in her dreams who was a famous football player.
10. The first writer was subjected to racial discrimination. Zitkala-Sa was a native American woman. She was dragged away from her
house to be admitted to Carlisle Indian School on the pretext of providing native Americans equality vis-à-vis European
Americans. However, their dress, their hairstyle and even their names were changed. They were considered inferior to the
Europeans and were discriminated and humiliated. They had to have short hair and could not wear what they wanted to. They
even ate by a formula. The second writer, Bama was subjected to caste discrimination and humiliated along with the other people
of her community. They were considered untouchables and were treated in an inhumane manner. Zitkala resisted oppression by
taking up the battle and fighting against the system. As a child, she had to submit to the oppression, but she stood firm on her
ground when she grew up. She wanted to live her life with dignity and equality. So she continued to raise her voice against the
injust system. Bama studied hard and earned herself a respectable position in society by educating herself. She too joined the
mainstream to fight casteism by raising her voice and motivating and inspiring people through her words and actions.
OR
Untouchability is the greatest social evil in India. It is a big curse on society. Certain castes in India are considered so low that the
water touched by them is considered unholy. When a high caste man is touched by a low caste man, he considers himself to have
been made impure and purifies himself by bath. From time to time, social reformers have come into existence to eradicate this
evil. To our great anxiety, untouchability still exists in Indian society in spite of all the steps taken against it. The problem of
untouchability is the result of the atrocities perpetrated by the Brahmins and Kshatriyas upon the Sudras or the untouchables. As
responsible citizens of the country, we can do our bit and contribute to eradicate this social evil by getting educated. We should
inspire and motivate others too to get an education and raise their voice against the unjust system. Awareness should be brought to
bring a positive change in the mindsets of the people.
