Carcassonne – The Riverside School 1

THE RIVERSIDE SCHOOL

A Carcassonne Central tile expansion by wolnic for Carcassonne II

Inspired by The School, a mini expansion released, for Carcassonne I, by Hans im Glück in 2011. This
version integrates The School with The River to provide alternative starting configurations, and introducing
the school mechanism to Carcassonne II.

EXTRA PIECES
• 2x2 tile block to be used as a starting block with The River
• 6x school and river tiles (3 left-hand side, 3 right-hand side)
• Neutral figure, or translucent meeple

ADDITIONAL RULES
Preparation
This expansion is designed to be played alongside the base game including The River. It is intended that the rules of the original
expansion, The School, are used. Other expansions may be added to your game, although the original rules for The School
indicated that it was only suitable for use with Inns and Cathedrals and that including other expansions might lead to issues.

There are two different game options included :-

• a single 2x2 tile block containing a river source that is used as a starting block
• 6 tiles – 3 left and 3 right – each containing half of The Riverside School, and a stretch of river

It is intended that you use either the 2x2 starting block, or a pair of school tiles combined with the river tiles.

Using the School and River Source block

Discard the River Source tile. Place the 2x2 School and river source block in the centre of the table. Place a neutral figure, or
transparent meeple on the school as The Teacher.

Draw and place the other river tiles as normal, working away from the School and River Source block. Finally place the lake
tile.

Standard tile placing rules apply for any tiles placed against the 2x2 school and river source block. All roads are separate from
each other, and The Riverside School acts like a junction separating the road segments.

You may not place a follower on any of the features which form the 2x2 school and river source block. Once normal tiles are
placed, you may place a follower on the city, the fields, or roads leading from The Riverside School, as you would normally.

The city is scored as normal. Roads are scored as normal, with additional rules from The School, which are included below.
Carcassonne – The Riverside School 2

Using the individual Riverside School tiles

Separate the 6 tiles into a set of 3 left-hand tiles, and 3 right-hand tiles. All include a section of river. Select one of the left-hand
tiles at random. Now select one of the right-hand tiles – bear in mind that the two river sections should not create a U-bend so,
if selecting randomly, the first drawn tile may have to be discarded, in which case select one of the remaining two tiles. Place the
two halves of The Riverside School in the centre of the table. Place a neutral figure, or transparent meeple, on the school as
The Teacher. Note that, because of the inclusion of the river past the school, there are only four roads, rather than the six as
included on the 2x2 block, or the tiles from the original C1 School expansion.

Draw and place river tiles working away from The Riverside School, then place the River Source and Lake tiles.

Standard tile placing rules apply for any tiles placed against the school tiles. All roads are separate from each other, and The
Riverside School acts like a junction separating the road segments.

You may not place a follower on any of the features which form the school tiles. Once normal tiles are placed, you may place a
follower on the fields or roads leading from The Riverside School, as you would normally.

Roads are scored as normal, with additional rules from The School, which are included below.

Playing with The Riverside School

A player who, first, completes and scores one, or more, of the roads leading to The Riverside School scores the road(s) as
normal and then obtains the teacher meeple. The player takes the teacher out of the school and places it in front of themselves.

When the next feature is scored, the player with The Teacher scores the same number of points. If the player with the Teacher
is the player who scores for the next feature, then points are scored twice. If more than one feature is completed and scored by
one player, the player who gets those points chooses which to score first, and it is these points that are awarded to the player
with The Teacher. If multiple features are completed and more than one player receives points, then the holder of The
Teacher decides which feature they will score bonus points from.

After scoring points with The Teacher, the teacher meeple must be returned to The Riverside School as part of the scoring
phase. If the completed feature is another of the roads leading from The Riverside School, the active player may now take The
Teacher from The Riverside School and place it in front of themselves.

If a player has The Teacher when an unoccupied school road is completed, the player with The Teacher will score no bonus
points, and The Teacher is then passed to the player completing the unoccupied school road.

Note: When all roads leading to The Riverside School are completed, the players have managed to successfully link the school
to the outside world. The Teacher now has plenty of students and will not leave the school again. You may leave The Teacher
on The Riverside School, or the figure may be removed from the game area completely.

Final Scoring
Features are scored as normal. If The Teacher is still in front of a player at the end of the game, no additional points are scored
as there is no specific order for scoring incomplete features and farms at that point.

Interaction with other expansions

Followers may be deployed on features on The Riverside School block through use of a Magic Portal (Princess & Dragon) or as
a flier (The Flier) according to their rules, but not to The Riverside School itself.

The dragon (Princess & Dragon) is allowed on The Riverside School block and can eat the neutral teacher figure if it is there,
removing The Teacher from the game entirely from that point. When playing with the dragon, The Teacher must be clearly
placed on one of the two tiles forming The Riverside School.

If using the River 2 expansion, the river junction tile should be the first tile placed after placing the School tiles
